1. Blueberry, maybe?
2. Probably pumpkin. Have you ever had pumpkin chocolate chip? It's a great combination!

1. Chocolate chip and banana nut (I know because CostCo sells these as a wholsale package. There must be a a reason for why they chose those two.)
2. Cranberry orange is my favorite!

I'm still very disappointed in the Dutch rail system. Can't get over it!

What is the obsession with the blueberry muffin. That's the last type of muffin I would choose. I did a little research at Starbucks today Inge, and you guessed it - blueberry muffins are their best seller.

From an Aussie perspective, my fav is White Choc Chip with Macadamias. Drool!!

WOW, loads of replies! Love it! Thank you so much for all your input ladies! Now I want to run to my kitchen and try them all out (I probably will, but not tonight anymore;-)

Blueberry muffins and everything chocolatey are definitely extremely popular, as expected, but plenty of other flavours are popping up too.
I really like the sound of something nutty, the lemon poppyseed ones have been on my to-make list for ages, I definitely want to experiment with adding pumkin to the mix too and savoury muffins are much more rare here, but I'm very interested in those as well.

Fiestywife: in my book it's always ok to have chocolate for breakfast!
Anne: deep-frying, oh la la;-) Reminds me of Nigella Lawson's deep-fried Bounty's, I still want to try that one day!

Fiona and Anne: those combinations sound amazing, yum.

Angie: scones, pastries, muffins,... I wouldn't turn down any of them. And research at Starbucks?!! Thank you!! That's so sweet of you.

Maya: go have a muffin, I insist!

Jenny: rave away, I hear you;-) My love for muffins and all other baked goods definitely has got something to do with my muffin top related issues;-)

LOP: I know!!-((( I've been ranting about it all week to everyone who will listen. I was so disappointed. And I really hope we can figure something out for September. Shopping the new Winter collection together would be fantastic too!

Sandy: smile. I'm considering baking as an extra source of income. I have my eye on a small restaurant here that specializes in American style burgers, and was thinking that home-made -American style- muffins could make a great dessert option. And since I know so many knowledgeable lasses, I thought I'd ask around here first.

Thank you again for your help with this!

Inge, that is a great plan! Good luck!

In the circles that I frequent, mildly sweet bran muffins seem to be rather popular for breakfast. My favorite is pumpkin with grated zucchini and topped with a mix of pumpkin seeds and chocolate chips.

Inge, do tell: was this for your own personal baking information?

I'm having these fantasies of you landing a dream job at a baking company and doing market research all day long!

A. I would guess blueberry
B. I'm not a huge muffin fan, they're too sweet for me, but would probably pick something light like lemon poppyseed.

I have been thinking about muffins all day!

how fun Inge - good luck getting this venture started.

1. I'm guessing blueberry
2. Chocolate, raspberry/pecan

a) blueberry
b) lemon poppyseed or raspberry

Mmmmm muffins yum!! Now I'm hungry!!!

Inge, my parents own a small diner-type restaurant in the NYC suburbs and they carry three flavors of muffins: blueberry, corn, and bran. I asked my dad and he said the corn is their most popular flavor, and blueberry and bran are about equal in popularity, although blueberry is probably a little more popular.

Chocolate w/chocolate chips

Apple Cinnamon a distant second

I want all of you to know that by the time I got out of work, I was so determined to find a chocolate chip muffin that I went to six different locations at Penn Station in search of one. The first five places I went to were a let down. However, on my way back to the waiting area, I noticed a Tim Horton's and they did indeed have choco chip muffins! I stood on line for it even as my train was boarding. It was so worth it!

LOL, Maya. Have another one for me.
Inge, the "hot" food item here is cupcakes...specialty ones like the muffins. One place has a cooler with individual cartons of milk to buy to drink with your cupcake.

Oh Inge, I love your ingenuity. I'm also looking for a second income stream but I'm a rather lack lustre baker.

In the UK muffins are sold through the supermarkets are:
Blueberry, I guess it's the touch of sour that compliments the sweet.
White choc chip with strawberry jam.
Al varieties of chocolate, choc chip, double choc chip etc.

Hi five LOP my favourite muffin is also orange and cranberry but I will always pass the muffin by for a piece of millionaires shortbread.

Oh Inge, I like pudding so much I double posted for you :0)

Oh, Inge, I just saw the answer to my question at the bottom of your response. What a brilliant idea!

I bags to sample the muffins that aren't blueberry!

Inge, what a fabulous idea!! I would love to taste test.

If you are after a muffin to be served for a dessert, rather than a breakfast type item, I would highly recommend this recipe for Chocolate Custard Muffins - http://www.guardian.co.uk/life.....danddrink1

Well, there are always blueberry muffins available whenever there are muffins, but I never see them being eaten, so I don't know if I would say they are popular.

I love lemon poppyseed myself. Or a cinnamon crunch. Chocolate chip is okay, but too sweet and too messy. It always melts on my fingers!

You are absolutely amazing, each and every one of you. Thank you for all this delicious and insightful input!

(I'm bookmarking this thread, because I want to try all your suggestions!)

Laura: How perfect would that be. Please start that baking company!!-)
Fingers crossed that this idea of mine will work.

Khris: I'm so sorry if I caused unwelcome cravings!

Tam: *chuckle* I always make myself hungry while researching food too.

Steph: wow, thank you so much for asking your dad! Wish I could go for dinner at your parents restaurant right now.

Maya: Noooo!-))) Six locations!! I'm tremendously relieved you finally found one (and apparently a very yummy one too), the guilt would have been too much otherwise. And next time I'm coming with you! Muffin hunting, totally up my alley;-)

Joy: good point. I've seen cupcakes all over the blogosphere and on American/UK websites and I'm pretty sure they'll be making their way over here soon too. Some of them are true works of art. I think I'd need a course in decorating them first though, I'm sooo unhandy-((

Julie: I had to go look that one up, and almost fainted, yummmmm, I need one of those NOW!
If you like we could help you brainstorm about extra income possibilities?

Angie and Rosie: Deal!

Fiona: thanks for linking to that recipe, I'm going to have a look at his book too.

Kristen: good point! I'm going to experiment with lemon poppyseed muffins this week. And I love chocolate so much that I don't mind the mess at all;-)

Long list so maybe I missed it, but I want to add, cranberry/walnut/orange, my fave.

Inge I know this comment is late...but are you set on muffins? Obviously cupcakes are a MAJOR craze at the moment, but I remember reading a magazine article talking about how macaroons were going to be the next big baking craze. Although that was a while ago now, and while they are definitely out there I don't know that they have really taken off in the same way that cupcakes did!

Very late here, but still:

1) Blueberry and chocolate chip
2) Raspberry/white chocolate
