OT: More Christmas gift help (what to get a two year old boy)

Since everyone was so helpful with my questions regarding what clothing is cool for a nine year old boy, I'm hoping someone might be able to assist with a new question. I have no idea what to buy a two year old boy, who is the son of a friend of mine (and my godson). I don't live near him, so I don't really know him or what he likes. I could get clothing, but his mom is kind of picky and I'm worried she won't like what I pick out.

Does anyone have any ideas of really good gifts for a two year old boy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat: what to get for a 19-month old boy. I have no idea what he has already. Looks like I will be shopping on Christmas Eve. I'll be watching this thread for ideas.

Lego Duplo. Toys don't get better than that. They are chunky enough for the tiny hands, anything from 18 months onwards, yet small enough to be a good and interesting toy that lasts a few years and can be added on. Basic Lego bricks are compatible with them too. They are great for developing imagination and fantastic for hand-eye movement, which helps speech development. It's hours and hours of fun in our house. Boys of that age seem to enjoy building towers and what better than Legos for that

blocks, trains, cars, books..... the "big" legos... what are they called? Duplos I think.

Thanks Elle and QM! The one issue is that I don't know what he already has, but I guess you can't have too many of the things you mentioned. Last year I got him some musical instruments and his brother some art supplies, because I figured you can never have too many art supplies. I'm off to look at Duplos right now!

I have a 20 month old daughter and as long as toys are concerned, Duplos will always be great for toddlers (and now Walmart has great deals on them). I agree, it's tough to get stuff for kids, they always have loads of it!

i have no experience with kids but i dont think you can ever have enough duplos....there are so many different types and the more you have, the bigger stuff you have to build. i have a 7-month old to buy for this year which has been tough but i will certainly be buying duplos next year!!

I love to buy books for kids. I know a bit of a boring aunt type pressie but I think it's so important that kids develop a love for books. At 2 years, you can give him some electronic toy that teaches letters, numbers, colors, shapes. I love Little People from Fisher Price.

My favorite book series for toddlers: Bing Bunny. They are awesome!

With my boys, I've found that bubbles of any sort are ALWAYS a hit! Otherwise sure bets are also likely to include playdoh; blocks (wooden, duplo or large sized lego); wooden trainsets or books. A Wiggles DVD could be a possible suggestion as well. Good luck!

At that age, my kids absolute favorite things were books, and so I've bought my niece's two little girls Dr. Seuss books for Christmas. Kohl's has a special where you can get a Dr. Seuss hardback book or good sized plush character for $5, and the proceeds go to a charity.

I usually buy one of these toys for that age range, they are a big hit! The phone has a cute feature where you can record a message. They are also pretty conservative toys if you're worried about upsetting the mother

The brand is B.Toys, found at target, the B. Hellophone, B. FunKeys, and B. Okiedeokie are all really fun.

Toy story 3 figures or the movie? Since the movie just came out those are pretty popular. He might already have books, legos, and blocks. I know my almost 3 yr. old has had those for some time now. She is starting to like the older girl toys now.

We've given them to almost every child we know, including our own. A small set might be a good gift for two children. At times, we've ordered a large mixed set and kept it in storage, giving a selection of the blocks to different children as occasions roll around.

As others have suggested - Lego Duplos (my kids really liked the Bob the Builder trucks) and Richard Scarry's "Cars, Trucks and Things that Go".

My son just turned two and loves this fire truck he received. (However, it makes noise and his mom might not appreciate that!) Another toy both my kids love is this keyboard, which also plays recorded songs they love to dance to. And everyone is right--you can't go wrong with Duplos or books.
