OT: Mineral makeup

I have stayed away from makeup till now because most makeup bothers my sensitive skin. I am considering mineral makeup and have read about it a bit. For those of you who use mineral makeup:

- What brands work best for dry skin?
- What is the bare minimum I need to get started? Should I buy a kit or buy the components individually?

I am eager to hear any other tips or ideas that you may have.

I use the bare minerals brand. I get the starter kits from QVC then buy refills of the items in the kits that I liked best. The store also carries them in the mall by me, but I find QVC prices a little better at times.

Near and dear to my face I use Bare Escentuals mineral makeup - I prefer the original ffinish (they recently came out with a matte finish, but same price for less product). I apply it with their kabuki brush (the application makes a difference in the finish and how it stays). I have combination skin.

I LOVE it! I have used it for 5+ years I bet with no desire to try anything else.

My sister has extremely dry skin and she uses it and loves it too (she introduced me to it).

If you want to try BE, there are BE stores, Ulta & Sephora carry it. You should be able to get 10-day samples of 1 or 2 foundation colors to see what wears best on you. I don't like lots of products (to confuse me), so I would try just the foundation mineral. You can venture into blush & eye minerals later. . .

Just don't use a liquid blush over the minerals ;-0
I think I have sensitive skin where it seems to break out from little triggers. Anyway, my skin behaves much better when I use the BE foundation than when I just use moisturizer and nothing over that.

It *is* quite sheer and does not give the same "coverage" as a traditional liquid foundation, but that is what I prefer.

Oh, yeah QVC too!

All the stores will often have a good starter kit if you don't already have brushes. Be sure to get a tutorial (at store or online) for how to apply.

I order my foundation from ebay sellers now to save some $$.

I am happy to hear that it is quite sheer; that's exactly what I am looking for to ease into this whole makeup thing. Do you use sunscreen underneath this makeup or does the makeup alone suffice?

Bare Minerals is naturally SPF 15 broad spectrum and being very, very fair I am pleased with its protection. I do quickly reapply/touch up midway through the day specifically for the protection.

Also, I am allergic to most sunscreens so it is wonderful to have protection that doesn't make my eyes and nose run.

I want to put in a plug for Jane Iredale's Mineral Makeup. I've only seen it available at Spa's/Salons but it is very light, has an SPF 15 and if you have sensitive skin it is super gentle. I use the pressed formulation as I find that the powder form is a little heavier. Good Luck!

I use Everyday Minerals (everydayminerals.com). I've found it's cheaper and just as effective. They have a pretty large selection of colors, etc, so it might be a little overwhelming, but they do describe them fairly well so I haven't had much trouble finding the right shade. One great thing is that they have small sample kits, so you don't have to commit too much before buying. I highly recommend their products!

I also use Bare Minerals and love it. I do use a sunscreen under because I burn very easily and at my age (50), I'm trying to keep my brown spots to a minimum. I apply the sunscreen and wait about 15 minutes before applying the minerals. I have combination skin and sometimes get dry patches and the mineral makeup is the only thing I have found that doesn't highlight the problem.

This product is really great and I've tried a lot of sunscreens!

Also, I purchased a starter kit because I didn't have any brushes and it was a very economical way to begin. I bought mine at Ulta, but look around at the other suggestions because the starter kits have different contents at different retailers so you can get just what you want.

I, too, use Bare Essentials, Mineral makeup. I started with it many years ago because of a serious breakout problem, and have been very pleased with it ever since! I initially started with the kit, but at this point use only the foundation. The mineral veil and "warmth" are optional, in my opinion, but the brushes you receive in the kit are vital, so it might pay for itself in that regard.You will need to use a moisturizer with it, but can use whatever is best for your skin type and it will work fine with the makeup.

I'm another happy Bare Minerals user- I used the id foundation. I'm going to be a bit controversial and say that I don't think the kit is all that necessary, even for the great brushes. What matters is the kind of brushes you use, but they don't necessarily have to be BM brand. When I first bought the foundation I already had a set of nice Bobbi Brown brushes, and I've been really happy with the way they've worked with the product, too.

What you really need is a good quality, natural bristle, densely packed dome brush for application. For concealing (under the eyes and around the nose, for instance), you want a brush with silky, synthetic bristles, that's flat like a paintbrush. I use the Bobbi Brown "wet foundation brush" and it's perfect for the job.

If you've got brushes like these, you're all set. If not, buying the kit might make sense for you. Whether or not the "warmth" and "veil" that come with it is up to you; I don't personally find them necessary.
