Hubby and I are taking a trip to Las Vegas next week. This is our first trip. We are not big gamblers, my guess is we will mostly walk around, check out the attractions and eat/drink a lot. What are some of the things we should absolutely not miss? Do you have any tips/advice on where to eat/what to see?

Also, I have one very specific question: We will be staying on the south end of the strip (Tropicana) and we would like to go to Fremont street on Saturday night. What is the best way to get there? How much does a cab ride cost? Is it possible to find a cab? Or is there some other way of transport that is more convenient?

Unless your hotel has a shuttle, cab it to Fremont, for sure. There are cab stands in front of every hotel casino so you will find one easily.

There is tons of shopping and people-watching to do all over the Strip. We were there at Christmas this year, and went to almost all of them over the course of our trip. The Bellagio is just stunning -- check out the Chululy flowers in the lobby ceiling and the Winter Garden -- and I enjoyed the white tiger exhibit at the Mirage too. Cute cub tigers!

Have a great time, and wear comfortable shoes! I think the pools might be open by then so bring a suit. Hanging out at a pool, especially if it has a swim-up bar, cannot be beat.

We really enjoyed the buffet at Paris- but there was a line that we had to wait in just to get in, so allow time. There's also a monorail system that you can use to get around.

Also, the latest issue of Lucky (April) has a city shopping guide of Las Vegas starting on pg. 66. They highly recommend skipping the outlet mall and heading to a place called Designer Fashion Clearance which is near the airport (pg. 72).

Exciting, I'm sure you'll have a blast! Be sure to report back! I've never been, but I'll be there in August for a conference and would love some advice on what to see and do.

Oh- and anyone coming to Vegas who is willing to drive a couple of hours, PM me- I can meet up with you at an outlet mall that is between Vegas and myself. I know it's a long shot, but just thought I'd put the offer out there!

If you are going to spring for one of the big shows, I highly recommend Cirque du Soleil's "Love," which is their tribute to The Beatles. We loved it! It's at the Mirage, I think. Also, take note that you can't flag down a taxi on the street -- they can only pick you up at cab stands. Isn't that odd?

I'd highly recommend "Love" too, and I haven't even seen it! LOL My 22 year old daughter saw it and said it was amazing, and my 48 year old sister saw it and wanted to go back the next night to see it again, it was so good!

FWIW I have a friend who conducts tours and such for Virgin Holidays and she said Love was definitely worth going to. We all went together to O several years ago and weren't that impressed, so I take her word for it, Before that, we'd seen La Nouba here in FL which was good, too.
I lived in Vegas, but it was too long ago for me to be of much help now, sightseeing wise. You could just walk across the strip then, not anymore. We enjoyed Emeril's and all the Picasso art strewn about the Wynn.

Some girlfriends and I went last summer. We mostly laid out by the pool, but we did check out the exhibit in the lobby of the Bellagio and it was beautiful. The Bellagio fountain show is worth waiting around for. I would have loved to see a Cirque show, but we didn't fit it in.

We spent one night drinking on the roof of the Rio, which is a spectacular view of Las Vegas at night (though the rest of the Rio was not that impressive). One thing we learned was that any of the clubs or bars you have to order "bottle service" in order to get a seat. Basically you pay for a full bottle of alcohol and mixers on a little cart in order to sit down. Expensive, but we did it at the Rio and it was worth it to sit and enjoy the view.

Right, I forgot about the shows. We saw "Jersey Boys" and was surprised by how much I liked it.

I have to admit, I never saw the big deal about the Paris buffet -- the line was always around the block! We usually grabbed crepes from the place right across from it instead. Yummy. I do love the Bellagio's buffet, but it's pricey and you need to go early to avoid the lines. We did Christmas brunch at 9:30, and had no line at all. When we emerged an hour later, there were at least 300 people in line. Plan ahead!

Oh, and the newest hotel the Cosmpolitan is very posh with a lovely bar. Worth having a drink there while waiting for the Bellagio water show to start. (Do not miss that at night. Stunning.)

My favorite breakfast place is the fake outdoor cafe inside Paris (with a lovely view of the slot machines). They serve real French press coffee. Good coffee is hard to find in Vegas.

I join the recommendation to see "Love", which I've seen twice (Beatles fan!), although all the Cirque shows are great. My favorite thing to do in Vegas, besides playing blackjack, is to be out in the desert - the climbing is spectacular, but just the landscape is well worth the drive if it is warm enough and you want to rent a car. It's about 40 minutes from the strip, but just such a vast difference to your eyes.

The Bellagio is worth seeing, both the lobby and the fountains. The shopping is of course incredible - there's Fashion Mall, and all the casinos have shopping (Ceasar's!). I love the buffets too, and the one at the Rio is an incredible international buffet. And the people-watching makes up for my general deprivation.

We just went a couple weeks ago for the first time as well. LOVE was AMAZING!!! If you are seeing shows that should definitely be on your list. We saw four- the other I would recommend is Jersey Boys.

As far as getting around- we used the bus. We bought a unlimited use three day pass for $20 and that got us back and forth to Fremont a few times and all the way down to monterey bay for the Wolfgang Puck Italian restaurant- yum! and the aquarium. We're used to public transport though. It gives you a lot of freedom- you can decide to go to the other end of the strip on a whim rather than having to make elaborate plans.

We don't gamble or drink so we people watched, shopped and went to shows. The casinos are fun just to walk around in. Definitely bring your walking shoes!We liked the food in the Paris casino too- although I can't recall the name of the place we ate.

Thanks Mary K, Kim, Una, Mo, DanaLynn for recommending LOVE! We are fond of seeing a show or two on vacation. For some reason, it completely escaped my mind this time, and I forgot to make reservations. I will see if I can find some tickets now.

Mo - I am confused. Can't you walk across the strip? How does one get from one casino to the other?

Bella, yes, if you are energetic you can walk the entire strip, although the Sahara and the Wynn are WAY out there. There are also a couple of free trams between casinos to make it easier - I think one goes from Excalibur to Luxor to Mandalay Bay.

Hello,

I am back from Las Vegas and I am happy to report that it was a wonderful vacation. Thanks to your wonderful suggestions, we saw "Love" (very impressive), had the dinner buffet at Paris (loved it!), and saw the fountain show at the Bellagio a few times. We also took a day trip to Grand Canyon. Very tiring but worth it!
I have zero outfit pictures, but here are a few random pictures.
