I don't understand why companies do that. I'm sorry Maya.

Did you get an offer, and the company took back the offer?

My recruiter said she had an offer for me and said she just needed the client's approval, but the client did not approve. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

My "find something else to do" deadline is quickly approaching, so I am exploring areas other than graphic design. It doesn't seem like I'm a fit in this field.

That bites Maya. Its awful to get your hopes up about something and then for it to fall through. Maya remember how hard it is for everyone to find work atm, don't think its just because you don't fit with graphic design. All this hullabaloo - don't take it personally that's for sure!

There are a lot of other things that compound my suspicions Tam. I'd rather not bring that to the forum though. I don't even feel like I want to do design anymore, to be perfectly honest.

Maya, I am so sorry to hear about this situation. Chin up - are you working with just one recruiter or many?

Shana, I have 3 recruiters looking for me. One of the things that makes me suspicious that this is not the field for me is that a few of my friends use the same recruiters and they all get work while I do not.

Maya - I know what it's like to question your place in a field after studying/working even. You're not alone!

Do you think its possible that you just don't shine on interviews?

I'm so sorry Maya, however I love the comment tortoise made because it gives hope that you could brush up on your interview skills to help the situation rather than giving up all you've worked for. I'd love to see you adopt an attitude of learning to shine in interviews. I know how extremely creative you are.

Maya,

I'm a real newbie around here, and I hope that it's ok for me to say that I never like seeing the word 'disregard' applied to something that's important.

I'm not clear on the goings-on, but wanted to say that I'm sorry to sort of glean that things didn't quite work out as planned. At the same time though, I really hope that you can view this as just a temporary bump in the road. And besides, as cliche as it might sound - you're one step closer to just the right thing. Perhaps whatever happened today was simply a process of elimination. Part of clearing out some brambles and weeds.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to hearing all about your shoe shenanigans.

Hope tomorrow's a better day. And...that it's not raining anymore.

Aw Maya, that sucks. *hugs* and I hope you find something that works out for you, whether it be in graphic design or some other field.

I don't shine on interviews because I don't get any interviews. Kind of a problem. I'll find something else to do. I'm just not sure what yet, and it might take a while to figure it out and in the meantime I need to do something, so Anthropologie is still on for Thursday.

Oh Maya, I am so sorry to hear what happened. I can only imagine how you must feel.

Hopefully it can only get better from now on. Good luck at Anthro!

Maya, I am so sorry to hear this happened. Shoot. (After hearing about your interview experience, though, maybe it was for the best...)
I used to be in recruiting and we had a policy of not making an offer to employees until we had a definite "yes" from the client company so as to avoid disappointments like this. It's frustrating. On the other hand, though, it sounds as though the recruiter was confident in your skills, so maybe she will have luck finding other opportunities for you.

I hear you about the main problem being the lack of interviews in the first place... with an over-flooded job market, it can take a heck of a lot of persistence to get your resume read. I hope you don't lose interest in graphic design, but maybe working someplace different like Anthropologie would give you a new outlet for using your skills, or give you some space to love your art again. I really hope all goes well on Thursday.

Kari, this was actually a different job. I don't know if I'm a dramatic enough person to say I'll never design again. I just think I need a break for a while from all this end-to-end disappointment. That way I can see more clearly whether I'm genuinely disinterested in design or if it's just that circumstances have watered down my enthusiasm.

Maya sounds like what you are doing is sensible. A bit of a break may just give you some perspective - and the market time to pick up a bit too. Never say never. I'm sure working at Anthro would be pretty fun too....hey from my perspective working ANYWHERE in NYC would be fun

That’s VERY discouraging and I’m so sorry to hear about this incident, Maya. I think you need to get to work at Anthro asap. My thoughts are like Tam’s – establish distance to gain perspective.

Maya,I am sorry to hear about this.I was in the same boat not so long ago and know how it feels.I managed to get a work permit after struggling for three long years.I only managed to get a call for one interview and that also didnt click, even though it felt like the perfect match. At that time,I was frustrated 'coz I had the knowledge and experience required and still nothing was working out.I decided to take a break and it has helped me gain perspective towards my career goals and priorities in life. Now coming back to the topic,it is an excellent idea to take a break and look at your interests.I am sure that you will find a job that suits your interest. All the best.

I agree about working at Anthro. That would be SO good!

Sometimes, if your heart isn't really truly in something, it sends out a vibe. I noticed this when I needed to leave my PR career but was still hanging on. Other people pick up on it. Have no idea if you feel this might apply, but what you said about design triggered the thought.

What a letdown Maya-((( I'm so sorry!!

I agree with what's been suggested: Anthropologie would be a fantastic "change of scenery" and in the meantime you'll be able to figure out whether or not you want to pursue designing or not.
