Today when I was walking biscuit, a car was following us for over a block and the 2 people in the car kept talking to me-trying to buy him! Im sure they were into the beyond horrible dog-fighting business....he looks kinda like a pitbull- very strong and muscular. They didnt want to take NO for a answer and now they know where we live! Aside from keeping him indoors as much as I can, does anyone have any suggestions how I can keep him safe? I couldnt get the license plate number- my eyes are not so good...I did call the police and they werent concerned....

As a dog owner, I understand. I have a fancy breed pup - Yorkie and there were stories on the internet about people stealing them. Always gave me a fright, as it's hard to imagine what can happen to your furbaby when bad people get a hold of them. How's your dog towards strangers? Does he have a chip? I'm pretty sure it was just a weird situation, I hope so! Please don't worry..

he is not friendly...not mean- just indifferent. but if someone tried to grab him, he has NO qualms about biting- they have signs on his chart at the vet warning techs about him...no chip, we were talking about getting him microchipped tomorrow (he has an appt for vaccinations) but they use a really long needle and the vet wanted to knock him out for it- which I dont want....shar pei have a high incidence of dying from anesthesia...thanks for the reassurance, just scared the hell out of me...there is SO much dog-fighting in the area,it just kills me...sick bast*rds

no, RJ, he likes to sleep on the couch.....but I check him at least 3 times a night (I never sleep well) thats very sweet. he's staying inside till my husband comes home!

I'd make a report to the police too , there may have been other instances x

OMG, you did the right thing calling the police. It just burns me up when they act so nonchalant about something that's so very important and disturbing to YOU. Dang it, taxpayers pay their salaries!

Off my soapbox, I hope everything is okay. Just keep that canine rascal even CLOSER to you.

Ugh, what a terrible situation and the reaction of the police just adds insult to injury.

Can you take Biscuit somewhere else for a while? A park? If those guys don't see you and Biscuit for a while, they'll probably give up. Also try going at a different time.
If you're going to continue walking him around the same area, I might find someone to accompany you, & definitely wouldn't leave him alone at home for a while. Keep the lights on while you're gone if you must, so it at least seems as though someone is home.
Do you have nice neighbors? If so I would inform them as well. They deserve to know, especially if they are pet owners, and it will also be good for you to have a record behind you.

Gosh, I may even consider a security system...but I am an obsessive and neurotic pet owner and would be a paranoid wreck if I suspected anyone was trying to use my Lucie as a bait animal. Just thinking about it fills me with rage and loathing.

thank you all SO MUCH! It makes me feel a lot better. Yeah, I will tell my neighbors (we live in a cul-de-sac near the main street) so they can watch for them too.....I was just shaking I was so scared. We will be home with him for the next few days...I dont work any longer (disabled) so Im with him almost all the time. What really upset me was their persistence- I kept saying NO and they kept raising their price....they followed us for over a block, hanging out the car door....he acts so tough, kicks at everything and everyone, but he's just a baby....

I would have him microchipped if at all possible. Mine are and it does add to the piece of mine.

Oh this makes me sick! I'd be concerned too! I'm so paranoid about my babies - and they are NEVER outside. However, one time when we were gone and had someone staying at our house "cat-sitting" they mistakenly left a door open and one of our cats got out. The cat sitters didn't even call and tell us until over 24 hours later that the cat was missing! My husband and I were on a ski vacation (it was just our 2nd day) and we immediately packed up and drove 7 hours to get back home - we searched the area all night and early the next morning we found him 4 blocks away, scared and hungry and sooooo happy to see us! Because I am neurotic and overly attached to my animals, if Biscuit was mine, I wouldn't leave him alone for a minute - I'd move his bed into my bedroom, etc. (I know, I'm a nut!)

Like Maya, I am seething with fury at the notion of anyone engaging in dog-fighting, let alone soliciting someone else's pet!! I'm so sorry you had to go through this, but try not to let it freak you out completely. Chances are it's just someone who was persisting at the time, but will let it go now that you and Biscuit are out of sight. That said, I echo the other ladies who suggested precautions like microchipping, informing neighbours and heightened supervision. I know my Reva never goes outside on her own and is ok with that. If Biscuit is in the habit of doing so, maybe just build in an extra walk to compensate? Take that walk with your husband or a friend for a few days if it would make you feel better/give you an extra pair of eyes to be on the lookout.
Don't let the cops put you off with their inexcusably-lacks attitude. If you're suspicious again, phone again and don't take no for an answer.
Above all, try to stay calm. This can be stressful and was no doubt terrifying, but you and your baby are safe now and will likely remain so.

DK, yes, I wish I wouldve had it done when he had his cancer surgery...Im just scared to have him put under- a lot of Shar Pei die from anesthesia.....my next dog Im going to have it done when they are spayed/neutered....if *God forbid*, he was stolen by dog-fighters I dont think a microchip would help...Taylor, you bet I am! Thanks....Marley, omg, Im SO glad you found him!!!!!!!!!! that wouldve scared the hell outta me too. We have a fenced in yardand Im home almost all of the time.I dont think you're a nut at all! Just a mommy....B always sleeps on the couch, but I do check on him at least a few times a night-Im sure I will be*extra* vigilant!We have a sliding glass door that is attached to the deck,and a fenced-in back yard so I can see him when he's outside-about 90% is visible....no walks for B for the next several days, at least.....I hate to *punish* him that way, but its safer....

Oh, thank you....I tell you, I locked my door and just started bawling like a baby. I moved from a really bad neighborhood to a *safe* suburb when I got married and this just scared the hell outta me....So many people on the north side fight dogs and we're just a few blocks away....the cops around here dont care about anything, unless murder is involved. One time a drunk guy threatened to shoot Biscuit if I walked him on his side of the street and the cops just told me to ignore it! Good thing winter is coming and he wont be out much....not at all without me watching him like a hawk!

The microchip is really easy - I think it's like a shot. No one on earth would want to steal our dog, but we did it in case she gets lost.

I am so sorry you had to deal with this scare. Dogfighting is a horrible thing, and you shouldn't have to worry about your furbaby being stolen for that or any other reason!

Oh my, how terrible !! What the heck is wrong with people. The microchip is a good idea. Also, I would write the police and tell them that you want this documented in case anything happens and that you feel unsafe. Also ask for a couple of patrols around your house. It is there job to be concerned.

( I was had a situation, at my parents' home that I was concerned about. The police weren't too concerned until I told them I was going to write them a letter just for documentation purposes that they had been notified and they got really concerned after that. )

If by some chance you see them again, make A REAL BIG DEAL that Biscuit " is sick" and needs a lot of medical attention. If they are interested in dog fighting this should turn them off.

Move the couch into your room and make sure Biscuit sleeps with you at all times. Get an alarm if you don't have one already. I am a paranoid pet owner in case you haven't noticed.

Thank you all SO much...it really, really helps to be able to talk about this here. Everyone is so kind and caring....I did call the police back and said I wanted a record of this...they werent too happy, but they took the info I had. We are right on the main street so I can easily watch out for that car (not many older red toyotas around here) and we will not go out alone...not that I wouldnt beat them with my cane! Thanks again for all the great suggestions and concern for my boy....

I just read this and am very concerned. Maybe you should carry something with you when you walk Biscuit. A neighbor walks after dark ( no dog) and always carries a golf club, police whistle, and/or pepper spray. The dog could also just have been an excuse to talk to you.

I meant to reply to this yesterday but got sidetracked . . I think you have every right to be concerned and you are taking all the right steps. I think Michelle is probably right that they won't come back, but alerting your neighbors to what happened, having someone walk with you & Biscuit, considering pepper spray and sharpening your cane ~ all properly cautious steps to take.

Well that's 24 hours without incident which is promising. I believe it is important to continue to take some precautions BUT I hope you are feeling a little easier today. Sending more hugs your way.

Yes, thanks..I do have a can of mace I carry on my purse but I will take it off of there and carry it with us- great idea! I did see the car- at least I think it was that one last night but not so far today....we will only be walking when DH can come along- at least for a few weeks if I dont see it again. I did tell my neighbors also....I am feeling a bit better today, thanks! Tim had the day off so that is great- he wont go back to work till Monday....anyway, thank you all so much- you ladies here are the greatest!

I have no great ideas, just wanted to give you a hug, I would also feel terrified if I were you.
I think you're doing all you can and I'm sure the situation with those horrible people won't be repeated.

Thanks, Celia! I really appreciate it. I wish I had a friend around here so I could walk B during the day without waiting till DH gets home from work, but at least he has a fenced-in yard he can go into and a deck he likes to lay on, surveying his territory- he thinks he 'owns the world'!
