OT: I was just interviewed for NPR!

If I find it I will post a link, but it was off the cuff and kind of rushed so I didn't sound so great. I should forewarn that it is about politics and I know that isn't always welcome here. But it was so exciting I wanted to share with my friends, and YLF members are my friends!

Someone overheard my interview and offered to look at my resume. Ironically, he works for a very conservative news organization (probably doesn't take much imagination to figure out which one). I'll send it anyway. Maybe he will have other contacts.

Yay Maya! Were you interviewed in a (wo)man on the street type program? I have to admit that I just snorted at the idea of you working at Fox News. But the more connections you make, the better! (Lisa, NPR is National Public Radio.)

NPR = National Public Radio, my most trusted news source along with BBC.

The interview was for Bob Hennelly. I'm not sure when it will be on or what program, unfortunately, but it should show up on the WNYC website (WNYC being the call numbers for New York Public Radio, if that wasn't clear).

I wish there had been more time, but the train was only 2 minutes away, and in fact it was probably audible in the background as it pulled in. I'm pretty sure I sounded dumb and inarticulate, but I don't care. It felt good to vent and rave in front of total strangers without looking like a crazy person!

Maya, that is awesome beyond belief. I am so happy for you! And a tad jealous.

Definitely forward your resume even if you aren't interested in the particular organization. You'd be surprised how many people recommend others with differing opinions. It isn't hard to parrot someone, but it sure is impressive when you can persuade someone with vastly different beliefs to listen to your reasoning and opinions on issues.

Maya, that's fantastic--I can't wait to hear it! And good for you for keeping an open mind about the conservative news org. You'll have to work with people of all kinds of political persuasions throughout your career, so staying "fair and balanced" is definitely a good professional quality to cultivate.

i've actually had friends who've worked at that conservative news organization who have completely opposite political beliefs and it has worked out. you never know.

I'm guessing most people who work there do, considering they are based in New York. I'm not worried about working with people of different political stripes (again, usually not an issue considering every place I have worked has been in NY...a very politically homogeneous city). At any rate, unless you are working for a political organization, politics should stay out of the office.

I don't think I could ever feel right working there though, integrity-wise.

I would love to hear your voice on the radio. I wonder if it will match the voice in my head. Do you have a typical NYC accent? In my head your accent is subtler.

Of course I would love to hear your opinions also.

I do not have a NY accent, and neither do the vast majority of people I know. I actually can't think of anyone I know who has the stereotypical NY accent.

When I was in France on my study abroad, one of the girls from the South (Alabama) told me that she could tell right away that I was "Northern." That is the only comment I have ever received regarding my bland lack of an accent.

I am quiet and tend to speak slowly because I had it drilled into my head as a child that I spoke to fast and mumbled too much.

Hee hee, Julie -- no, Maya doesn't have a New York accent. Not at all.
