OT : I HAVE to win with this......

Today I was out with my mom when I spotted a lovely, young woman - probably 20's. What caught my attention was how short her shorts were and the beautiful baby boy she was carrying. I waved at the baby as she walked by and he waved back over her shoulder. Then I noticed, written across the back of her short, shorts : GOT CRABS !

Lovely....Michelle, I think I may have beaten Corey's wedding observations.

Ugh. I am never offended by folks who wear sweats on the plane or hoodies to the grocery store: super-casual doesn't bother me. But seriously, clothes with tasteless sayings or images on them really push my buttons. I'm often tempted to say something to people who wear things like this in public. Yuck.

I wonder if there's any chance the young lady was the child's sitter or the nanny. Somehow that would make it less offensive. As in, she's young, she's childless, she doesn't know any better and is not quite grown up. But, if she's a mom ~ well then, she should know better.

Mac, I agree, super-casual doesn't bother me either, unless there is a body part hanging out but the thought of having to explain to my little ones " what does that mean, mama ? " really upsets me.

Sparky, I think that either way, it was awful. If my babysitter or friend or family member took my child out with that across their bum, I would be mortified. Do we give special dispensation for young and trying to be witty ? That is actually very interesting to think about....I wore some really stupid things when I was young, but I would have been mortified to even be seen with someone wearing something like that. When I was in jr. high, if your bra straps showed, you were a slut.

Would I have even noticed if it were a young man with an offensive, sexist t-shirt ? Men's offensive t-shirts and bumper stickers have been around for decades - but I find this with girls/women to be more recent ? Is this feminism ?

If you found that distressing, don't ever go to the peopleofwalmart website. Trust me, you will end up with images forever burned into your brain that you don't want.

In the defense of the girl - I'm 99.999% those were Joe's Crab Shack shorts (I know they have shirts that say that so shorts wouldn't surprise me) so it's possible she didn't even get the double entendre there. However, it's still really tasteless and, really Joe's Crab Shack really shouldn't be putting that stuff out into the world.

I once saw a 12-year-old girl (or thereabouts) at the local mall, wearing short athletic shorts with a saying across the butt. I can only hope that her high school's team was The Rams, as her shorts said, "Ram This."

When I said that the young woman was lovely, I wasn't being facetious. She was soooo cute, smiled at my mom as they walked by, and she seemed so good with that baby..that you have to wonder what she was thinking.

Dusty you are a really compassionate and open-minded and you are absolutely right. Maybe she didn't really "get" it. But just like the "ram this" shorts, you have to hope that someone in her life would get it and explain it.

( Too funny about the "contest" : you should know the only thing I have ever won was a stuffed frog at the age of 8....and I was THRILLED....he had nothing written across his bum, by the way.)

It really is so unfortunate that these young girls see nothing wrong with wearing degrading clothing. We have a local BBQ joint where the young waitresses wear tee shirts advertising their full racks. This is mild compared to the other one that they wear. I'll spare you the description of that one, it's that obscene.

Hmm...maybe it's a way to deflect unwanted male attention? I am sorry, but I actually think it's kind of funny. Tasteless, but funny. It's pretty bad, but Ram This on a 12 year old is just criminal. Not funny. A 12 year old can't even argue she is exercising her feminine power to assert her sexuality, or whatever Christina Aguilera used to say. Perhaps it all goes back to our collective wish to banish shorts with messages on the butt. The ribs place with rack double entendre is just, sigh, depressing.

Yes, Dashrashi takes the prize. The "ram this" one actively makes me furious. Promoting child exploitation is not ok, ever, under any circumstance. The "crabs" shorts could be construed as humour, even if it's pretty classless. I admit I giggled slightly when I read it, but Dash's example raised my blood pressure.

Those shorts Dashrashi described make me see red. I hope someone who works at a rape crisis centre sees her, takes her aside and explains why an open invitation to "RAM THIS" written on her backside is wrong on oh-so-many levels.
