Things here in central VA are much worse than predicted. We were expecting 20-40 mph winds with 2-4 inches of rain, and instead we've recorded gusts to 70mph with at least 5 inches of rain as of an hour ago. and some hours to go. The power went out at 2:30 this afternoon and I'm typing by candlelight.

We've lost two trees so far, one was a massive and beautiful old walnut that provided most of the shade in our yard, and parts of the barn roof are missing. We have a medium size leak into the house. There's no way to safely go outside and check on the animals at this point.

My good friend has had a tree fall on her house and one on her car.

We're safe for the moment, but it's pretty scary still. Please, if you're in the path of this storm, take it seriously. And if you're able, do report in. I'm signing off to conserve battery power~

Hanging in so far. It has been raining for the last 5 hours or so but nothing more than that yet. I wonder how many hours it will take to travel from VA to PA.

Oh my goodness, Beth. So sorry to hear about your trees and your friends bad luck with her house and car. You must be so worried about your animals and the barn. I really hope that the damage is manageable and that your animals weather through the storm.

4.5 years ago, there were 70 mph winds in Seattle and we were traveling abroad. The girls were at Doggyhaven. Some of our roof tiles blew off and the garden was a mess, but nothing serious. We live in the city so our power was restored within a day or two apparently. But people out in the burbs and countryside went without power for weeks - and it was just below freezing too. The girls out in the countryside at Doggyhaven were without power for days.

My thoughts are very much with you, hubby, and your animals, Beth.

Beth, you've been on my mind all day. I'm so sorry to hear about all the damage, but I am so glad that you are safe. I hope your animals are hunkering down in the barn and that you will find them no worse for the wear in the morning.

We never lost power here. Perhaps being a few miles west, and more towards the fringe of the storm, made the difference. We have been on edge all day, though, due to the much stronger than anticipated wind gusts and rain. Our house is surrounded by tall trees, and my biggest fear is one landing on the house. I am thankful that yours did not. So scary!

It seems as if the storm is starting to pull out now. Hopefully, the wind will also die down over the next few hours.

Beth, please report back when you've been able to check on the animals and all. Now I'm really worried about family in Virginia east of Richmond near Ditchley. I think they are on a bit of land near the water between the Potomac and Atlantic off Highway 3. Are you anywhere near that area?

Joy, I'm sorry I can't give you any information about Ditchley. I can tell you that it is a slow moving storm and is dumping a lot of rain. It is taking forever to pass by. I hope that your family remains safe and that you hear from them soon. Hopefully, the worst is over for them, too.

Beth, I'm so sorry about your tree. I hope that's the worst of it for you and that the storm has passed you by now. I'm in DC and the storm hasn't been much more than some rain and wind for me. I just stepped out onto the balcony and the rain is coming down steadily, but not in sheets, and the wind doesn't feel like more than a nice breeze. I'm hoping that means that it skipped us over. There are definitely people without power but luckily I am not (yet) one of them. I think my power lines are all underground, which helps in weather disasters.

I'm here in D.C. too, Steph, and the wind is really kicking up now, but as long as the street trees out front and my neighbors big elm stay upright, we should be good to go. The storm should be out of here for District residents in the next couple of hours. Thank the Lord for those underground power lines in the city, because we didn't lose power either, like so many in the surrounding areas of Virginia and Maryland.

My mother and sister got hammered by Irene in eastern North Carolina earlier today, but hurricanes are a way of life down there. You just wait for the waters to recede and then proceed on with the clean-up. We'll be going down to help with that.

Here in NYC, it's less than expected. There's a lot of flooding in some regions - I just stood in two feet of East River water on the street - but basically it's a best case scenario. No word yet on when we'll have public transit; power outages are less than predicted.

We ended up being on the outskirts of the storm and it rained pretty hard all night, but no visible damage and much less flooding nearby than predicted. Power never lost - phew.
Hope everyone else fares as well.

Hang in there Beth! Hope to hear from you again soon. I went through a catagory 4 hurricane and FL. and they are no fun at all. I hope you guys get your power back soon and that you've got enough provisions to last you however long you need. Thinking of you and your family.

We lost power in the middle of the night, but now it is back on. Rain and wind, but we are safe. Scary.

Checking in from the Philadelphia area.

We lost power for about 12 hours, but it's back now. No power, no pump, so there were a couple of inches of water in the basement that the pump has now gotten rid of -- I'm just using old towels to dry the floor and all will be well.

SO is safe so far in CT, though the seawall at the beach closest to his house was destroyed. (It's a stone wall with a concrete top, so that should give you some idea of the violence of the sea.) He still has no power and is quickly running out of juice in the cell phones, but otherwise safe and sound.

Beth, I hope you are ok and will check in soon. So sorry about the walnut tree, hope the animals are safe and sound. Here in Northern NJ a lot of flooding, we live halfway up the hill, in a way that houses behind us are higher up with a stone wall separating levels and three neighboring houses had the mud slide, literally their backyards collapsed, bringing broken wall pieces and all the soil and mud down to the lower level. Houses are not compromised though and the wall behind our house seems to be holding up (one crack). Feel so sorry for the neighbors, lifting the walls and fixing the yards will be a major construction work...

Beth and everyone affected by the storm, I'm still thinking of you.

I'm very relieved that my Dad has just sent an email saying that where he was in Manhattan escaped the wrath of Irene.

He has been fortunate to get hold of a plane flight out to Europe on Monday night (US time).

Hi guys, we're fine and all of the animals are fine. Our neighborhood lost a ton of trees and we'll be out of power for an undetermined time. The area is alive with the sound of chainsaws and generators!

Glad everyone seems safe and sound, minus some minor losses.

We had a power outage for almost the entire day, but nothing else to report.

My biggest concern is how I'm going to get home. I'm in NJ right now and public transportation will not be fully functional for some time. I will most likely have to work from home tomorrow and anticipate a long and unpleasant commute back.

I'm very anxious to get back to my apartment and see how it held up. I live on a hill in a very sequestered little space so I think it should be fine, but I'd still like to see it for myself ASAP.
