chewyspaghetti

I have one of those pre-fab fiberboard bookcases (like from Ikea or Target) that I'd like to paint. Does anyone if there is a paint that will stick to that kind of surface, and how do I prep it for paint?

I would actually do a Krylon for plastics matte spray paint. I have had great luck painting laminate with that, especially with a light sanding to prep. If you get your spray paint technique down it actually provides a nicer finish than a brush or roller can on a non-porous surface like those bookcases.

I've done a lot of painting projects. I clean with TSP and rinse well. For a smooth surface, I use a super adhering primer. I am not sure if the same brands are available in the U.S. I find para is excellent. Then paint.

The krylon plastic paint is good but you would need a lot of cans and it can get expensive.

Khris, a couple of years ago I spray painted a pre-fab bookcase and I agree - it does get a little expensive. I had to use 8-10 cans to get a smooth finish and full coverage (it had one of cheapy wood looking laminatey finishes). If you are handy with a paint brush, using acrylic paint will stretch your dollar. Apply one coat of paint, let fully dry, sand lightly and then apply second coat. You can use Krylon spray primer to prime. That is what I used on the dresser that I re-finished and I still have some left in the one can I used.
