Just wanted to share these ideas and info for anyone interested.
I'm making a trio of board for my kids' bedroom, and they are turning out to be easier and cheaper than I would have thought.
chalkboards
You can get spray on chalkboard paint at the craft or hardware store (I used a 50% off coupon and got it for under $5) and use it to paint the glass or plastic cover of an old frame. Just scuff it up first with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe it clean and dry- use a couple of coats for full coverage. I found cute oval shaped frames at the thrift store for my daughter's room, and painted the plastic frame a different color.
cork bulletin boards
You can buy pre-framed cork boards for a few dollars at office supply stores or Target and cover them with fabric, but I wanted something different. I found a roll of cork at a craft store (used a 50% off coupon and got it for $1.50), and am going to use spray adhesive to attach it to the backing of a matching old oval frame from the thrift store. I'm painting the frame of this one a different color and I think that I will also add fabric to it.
Dry Erase Calendar
I saw one of these at the crafts store, and thought it was a brilliant idea, and easy to replicate. It was just a frame with a glass front. There was a blank calendar painted on the back in black paint, and you can fill in the dates/events on the front with a dry erase pen. I am doing this with a larger oval frame for my dd that I also found at the thrift store. I'll paint the frame of this one a third color. You could also back this with some fabric or paper to make it colorful.
I wish that I had taken before, and in the process pics, but I will try to post finished pics in this thread. This is a great way to use old frames and make a little more interesting way to keep organized.
