As I mentioned in a previous post (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-you-later) my father-in-law was admitted to Palliative Care.
Early this morning, he passed away. When we were with him last night, he was very confused and in a great deal of pain. But in a lucid moment, he recognized my 16-year-old son, called him by name and smiled. Then he went to sleep. In a horrible time, it was a beautiful moment.
My father-in-law was what I would call a "marshmallow man" - crusty on the outside but a big ol' softy on the inside. He took me in as one of his own when I started dating my husband 28 years ago and used to call me "the little one" (my husband's family is all over 5'10" and I'm 5'1"). When my husband had cancer just when we were about to be married, my father-in-law and I bonded over caring for my husband. In later years he told my husband "the woman can do no wrong in my eyes" - I felt the same way about him.
We are glad his suffering has ended. We will miss him dearly.
