OT: Forest fire in my hometown

I've been on vacation in the US visiting my family, so I haven't been on lately. Sadly, our trip has been marred by the massive forest fire in my hometown:

Fortunately none of my family's property is under threat but the whole city is full of smoke and it is probably going to get worse.

Mander, I've been seeing more and more devastation caused by this huge fire and I'm relieved to hear that your family is safe. It's just so sad to see the destruction to homes, lives, nature and the environment. I do hope they get it contained soon. Take care.

Oh, goodness! I'm so glad that your family's house is okay, but what an awful situation. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their homes and businesses, or are at risk of doing so.

Oh, Mander, my father is from there too... and I have friends there. Watching the news and hoping everyone is safe. It's terrible.

Glad you and your property are ok, Mander. My sister and brother-in-law live in Colorado Springs. I spoke with her last night and she thought they were safe, but the fire doubled in size overnight and they have been told to stand by to evacuate. Very scary. I'm hoping they get it under control soon.

I've been keeping an eye on the Colorado Springs fire too - we just moved from the Boulder area in Colorado to Utah a year and a half ago, and we also have family in CO Springs.

I am finding the whole thing extremely scary and shocking - seeing those photographs of the fire leaping right on over the mountains and into residential areas in Colorado Springs is frightening.

I'm glad to read that your family's home is ok, though I can imagine how stressful this whole thing must be. I still can't get over the pictures of that fire. It seems to have gone 'weird' the other day and gotten way out of control, somehow, due to changes in the wind and the extremely dry and hot temperatures of late.

Are you there now Mander? In CO Springs, or nearby? I read that every single hotel/motel in CO Springs is fully booked. Are you still able to stay in your family's home (for now) ?

Hang in there, and I am crossing all of my fingers and toes for a torrential rain storm to show up ASAP.

My family is on the other side of town, quite far from the flames but we know several people who lived in that area and my parents had a small property near the evacuation zone. The weather is a little better tonight so hopefully no more neighbourhoods will go up. Last night there were dry thunderstorms and a strong dry wind that blew the fire in unpredictable directions and it was very difficult to fight.

They are not saying just how many houses have been destroyed but something like 32,000 people have been evacuated. It must be pretty bad, though, because President Obama is coming to visit on Friday.

Holy crap. I'm so sorry! Nothing causes devastation like a fire. Except maybe a hurricane. I sure hope they get it out soon, and my heart goes out to all those who are suddenly finding themselves homeless.
