OT: Football World Cup - are you watching?

In England it is impossible to escape the fact that the Football (or Soccer) World Cup started last night.

While I generally prefer rugby, I do enjoy the odd game of football and especially the excitment and electric atmosphere that accompanies big games and with all the variety of ex-pats that live in London it isn't just the England games either. Plus, for the first time since 1982 New Zealand has a team!

I have an idea of a challenge too - but just wondered if anyone else is watching?

Yes!!! A huge fan here. My country is playing too, so I am very excited ( first game is tomorrow). At home we call soccer the most important non-essential thing in the world

Yeah. It's like that in the Netherlands too, Tanya.

The semi final is in Cape Town!!! Final in JHB. At least - I think so. Sooooo, I'm on the South African side for this Word Cup - and not Dutch!

Oh nope, I am from Serbia and we happen to be in the same group as Germany So very much against Germany I am afraid.

I am not because I am not interested in watching sport. BUT DH stayed up til 3am last night watching, and he keeps switching over to check up on it now!

And here is a bit of fashion football related trivia - apparently (according to the BBC) Argentina has never won a World Cup when the mascot has not worn a hat.

Zakumi the leopard does not have a hat, so that's the Argentinians out then...

Tanya - opps sorry - big football faux pas. Does it help that Serbia was the first European team that NZ has ever beaten in Europe a couple of weeks ago

Ha, that's a great bit of trivia!

No worries about that. And you are too funny! We have an expression, which is difficult to translate, and says something along the lines of : "First kittens are to be thrown into water" ( not to be taken literally of course).

We're watching! The house is gearing up for the US vs England match coming up this afternoon.

Can I whine for just a moment about those noisemakers? We've been watching the games on mute so far b/c the drone in the background makes me bananas.

Traci of course you can whine, it wouldn't be a thread about sport if there was no whining involved!

We are just watching a little bit of the warm up on TV before heading out to watch England v USA - the English fans have discovered another use for the vuvuzela - beer bong!
