Guess what? The doorbell just rang and a delivery man was standing there holding a vase with a dozen red roses and a heart-shaped "I love you" balloon. Unfortunately, they were for my neighbor and he was at the wrong house! I think my hubby may have to make a little trip to the florist today and it better be tulips!
It's hard to pick a favorite - peonies, lily of the valley, & camelias are definitely my top three but I also adore gardenias, hydrangea, tulips & lilac. I would have said daisies in my twenties but once I was able to have my own garden, my tastes changed! I was an avid gardener when I lived down south but my current yard, while quite large, is completely shaded & wooded which makes gardening quite difficult.
Red roses are the symbol of love. That's probably the reason for the Valentine's tradition.
I like freesias (for scent), hydrangeas (for shape) and tulips (for elegance and color). Hubby loves sun flowers and tulips... Guess what comes into our Turkish and Dutch household -- Tulips.
It used to be daisies, but I don't know if I could pick now. I'm sure that I'm the odd one out here- I don't like to get bouquets. They make my allergies go haywire, and the cat always poses a problem (chewing on them or knocking them over).
I love cottage flowers, cut in a vase. In the garden, I am a sucker for roses. I am a bird and wildlife lover, so I am slowly trying to cultivate a native garden (purple coneflower, black eyed susan, bee balm, lilac, etc..) but I also have several rose bushes. I just can't give up my beautiful roses (which I interplant with lavender because I love the combination of scents).
I love calla lilies, especially in either purple or red and yellow. I also love orchids and am currently nurturing a gorgeous dark pink phalaenopsis orchid plant into full bloom.
Alan is buying a house at the moment and my only requests for it are a study for all my books and a garden with good light so I can plant a couple of flower beds.
Sweet thread- I love peonies and lilies, probably because these are both flowers that grow in my Mum's garden. I'm also partial to tulips, but for some reason really dislike most roses. Well, "dislike" might not be entirely accurate- I mean, all flowers are beautiful, aren't they? I guess they just don't excite me all that much.
Another peony lover here. I'm not fond of cut roses, but love visiting rose gardens. If I could, I would make annual late spring pilgrimages to rose test gardens.
Honestly, it's hard to name a flower I don't like. I'm extremely picky (to the point of occasional snobbishness) about floral arrangements, however.
Oh, I forgot hydrangeas. They have a very special place in my heart. They were blooming all over Brittany when I was there, and I used to pick the fallen bits and clip them in my hair. Whenever I think of Brittany, I think of nautical clothing, a very specific shade of blue that is on all the window shutters, and hydrangeas.
