OT- eyecream recommendations?

I have been suffering from sore itchy eyelids which puff up when it gets too bad. The doctor gave me some strong cortiesone cream and told me to keep them well moisturised. I try not to use the cream too much as it thins the skin not great on eyelids as they are already thin!! I have yet to find a moisturiser though. I have run the gauntlet of over the counter chemist moisturisers, drugstore beauty brand ones and so on and so forth, it has cost me a fortune and I haven't found one that works do any sensitive skinned lasses have and recommendations???

This won't work well during the day, and I haven't tried it on my eyelids either - but when I had a rash on my elbows, the best thing for moisturizing turned out to be Aquaphor. It's thick, almost like Vaseline or something, but it was non-irritating and moisturized very well. This might be worth a try at bed time.

You can buy it in little tiny tubes too - which also work as a lip balm.

I cannot vouch for whether or not it works as an eye cream, but I've used it for lips, knees, elbows, small areas on my face (at night) and it's non-irritating and highly moisturizing. Like I said, I wouldn't necessarily put this on or around my eyes during the day, but if I had itchy eye skin and needed intense moisture, I'd certainly give the Aquaphor a whirl at night. Try the mini sized tubes in a two pack - if it doesn't work for your eyes, it will still turn out to be very useful as a lip balm, so you can't lose.

How about organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil? Just smoothing a very light coating over your eye lids before bedtime? And even a small application during the daytime. A light coating should absorb right in and not be greasy.

Oh Louise, that's very annoying, I'm sorry.

I often use Cetaphil (Galderma), it's a facial cream (not a lotion) for dry and sensitive skin prescribed by my dermatologist (but you can get it over the counter too).

I know there's a US Cetaphil too, but I'm not sure if that's the same cream, I've never compared the ingredients lists.

I like Sibu b/c it has sea buckthorn berry (from the Himilayas) which is supposed to be really good for rosacea and problem skin. I have very sensitive skin (and oily!) and I find it quite nice to use (I only need an eye cream b/c we have a fairly dry climate) but honestly I use the Sibu facial cream on my eyes more b/c it's cheaper to do so. The eye cream is a little richer.
I don't know if you have this brand in the UK. And I don't know how much shipping would be to the UK from this site (I have a $5 discount if that helps = "RUG268"). I thought I'd throw that in there too.

ETA: shipping to the UK is the same as to Canada, so reasonable. I order up to $80 of stuff that weighs less than 3 to 4 pounds and pay $4 shipping. If it's under $80 I also pay no duty or tax. It seems to be similar for the UK.

ETA2: I also use the oil allover my skin and on my eyes at night -- very healing qualities:

Louise, quick one, I have to run... the finest and most natural products I know of are those from Weleda or Dr. Hauschka. Weleda has some promotions now in the run up to Xmas, I have to check if I still have codes if you're interested.

Dr. Hauschka is similar thing, a bit more pricey though. Not sure if they still have the counter in Selfridges in Birmingham (you're around there, right?) but I used to order on-line.

But, in recent weeks I've moved towards natural oils and my skin seems to like it. No nasty stuff in it. My skin always gets dry patches and redness this time of year when I'm preparing for travelling and running around, but not this time!

Also, Kari opened a great thread a while ago about her skincare routine and Shannon also had a thread about her skincare (in answer to CocoLion's question) and mentioned Burt's Bees.

Louise, I have this problem when allergic to something I'm using on my face or even when around cats. You might have an allergy causing this. Aquaphor has helped me in the past and, after reading Karen's skin story, I've tried essential oil from Whole Foods with great results. The tiniest bit of argan oil is absorbed quickly and can be worn in the daytime. A good olive oil may do the same thing.

Hi Louise. I'm also sensitive around the eyes. At night I use a Neostrata cream which is great but won't work as a day cream (it's too rich, and concelear won't stay put).
For day I use Hydraphase by La Roche Posay and it works wonders: it's light but very hydrating. It will absorb immediately and it's totally hypoallergenic. I hope it helps.

I use Aquaphor when I have dry, chapped lips or a problem very dry skin area. It's a great product, but in reading my tube, under "Warnings" it states "When using this product do not get into eyes." So it would concern me to put it on the eyelids. It is very greasy and takes a while to absorb.

There are 7 ingredients listed in this product, including Lanolin Alchohol, my main concern would be a negative interaction between one of the chemical components of the Aquaphor with the prescription steroid cream Louise is using.

PS: I am a huge Aquaphor fan, and use it on my lips or if my cheeks get especially dry, but I wouldn't use it near my eyes.

Claudia - thanks for mentioning the bit about not using Aquaphor near eyes on the label. I haven't read the whole label and I'm glad you caught this. So maybe not Aquaphor around the eyes Louise...oops.

I have skin that is sensitive to a lot of products and have found jojoba oil to work really well as a night cream. If you get any in your eyes is just makes it cloudy (annoying) but does not cause irritation. In some of the research I did, jojoba is supposed to be the closest oil to our own natural oils and therefore is absorbed well.

You could also try vitamin E from Webbers, although I am sure there are other brands. You can also break the capsules and use it that way.

I like Kiehls products for my sensitive skin but for any little bumps I use an essential orange oil just dabbed on. I've also used homeopathic Calendula cream with success on minor rashes in the past.

I've been using this and really liking it, though it's not specifically an eye cream so I can't say whether it's supposed to be used there (but I do use it that way).

Louise, I also have this problem and, like you, have had to use cortisone cream from time to time. But I don't like doing that either, so I'm watching this thread very closely!

I haven't been able to figure out exactly what's causing the irritation. Although, I do know now that I'm allergic to some eye shadows. Last week my lids broke out again in the red, itchy stuff...no idea what caused it to happen. So annoying!

I have very sensitive skin as well. I don't put eye cream right on my eye lids but pat around my eye. I have used a few with success. I think it is trial and error. Avene (I think that is right spelling) is my favourite right now. There are others. I did use Wibi Lotion (pure glycerin) at one time. I am also careful with the kind of eye make up I use.

I had an allergic reaction and it caused the appearance of dry skin. It wasn't exactly dry skin though but some kind of dermatitis. I used Boiron homeopathic calendula cream. They also make a gel but the cream was more helpful. After a few days it got slightly better and I mixed the cream with concealer and it helped the redness look better.
Hydrocortisone didn't seem to help but the calendula did. I also took an over the counter allergy pill - allegra here in the US.

The one thing about aquaphor or vaseline is that they aren't moisturizers. They do create a barrier on skin though which will keep existing moisture/skin oils in. Not a scientific explanation but just through I would add that.

I find that any eye cream with hylauronic acid really keeps my lids moisturized. I am currently using Cerave eye cream with great success.
