OT: embarking on a masters - YouLookFab Forum

after many years of telling myself i wasn't 'smart enough' to get a masters (namely because i hadn't a CLUE what interested me), i am now taking steps in that direction.

oops. i should add i have NOT been accepted yet (i haven't even submitted an application). right now i'm exploring 3 industries to figure out where i'd fit best,
then submit an application.

i am looking into a few media/visual arts programs @ AAU (academy of art university) in SF. i just chatted with an adviser, and she recommended i develop my visual arts skills in addition to exploring/doing things in the areas of interest to filter what i want most.

i am considering:

1) animation/visual effects
2) game design
3) web design/new media

if any of you have advice on maintaining self confidence, a clear vision, anything related to these areas, etc...i'd LOVE to hear. i have been out of school for a little while, and am most nervous about being 'good enough' to do well, push myself and grow.

i feel excited and terrified at the same time LOL.

all of you are so warm, gracious and smart in so many ways. i aspire to be half that

Congratulations on being accepted to a Master's program. That is quite an accomplishment!

I think one thing that keeps your clear vision in mind is reminding yourself why you are undertaking this adventure. You could even make a list of your reasons why and post them in a place where you would see them every day. This will keep you motivated and excited to learn, even when it gets challenging.

You are also enrolled in a program for a field that is changing every day! How exciting!

From a realist, take a good hard look at the job market. You don't want to be saddled with student loan debt and no good way to pay it off.

I studied with a lot of people who went back to school to do what they are passionate in, and like Annagybe pointed out, job market was an important consideration for them. I don't know anything about the visual arts field, but it may be something you want to research on your own in addition with talking to a career councillor. I know some people that got majorly bummed out that way - they swore up and down there would be cardiac surgery jobs, and now, let's just say there's tons of cardiac surgeons that have no jobs!
