OT: Earthquake in VA--Beth?! Debora?!

Beth and Debora (and anyone else), I hope you and your families are okay after the earthquake.

I have family in Virginia. Everyone seems shocked, but are doing fine. Thinking of you....

Hope everyone is ok! My building was evacuated though we are pretty far and only felt a little tremble.

I hope everyone in the area is doing OK! I think I actually felt it in Boston - at the time, I just thought I was a little dizzy or something... but in retrospect it did feel like the earthquakes we had in LA when I was growing up.

my husband is in DC at a meeting- evacuated but safe. He tells me they are being precautionary before letting people back in.

We're fine here. Very bizarre feeling though. I was outside, leaning against the wood paddock fence when I felt shaking coming up through the fenceposts, which are about 3' into the ground. Then the ground started to sway. It was like standing on jello.

I've felt the ground shake, but never sway like that before. Apparently the epicenter was around 90 minutes from here, but we have relatives who felt it in Connecticut. :O

Thanks Heather! We are all fine here, as far as I know. I'm still waiting to hear from my son, but he should be fine. He's at band camp and should have been out on the field when it hit. I was in the car and didn't feel anything, but my husband felt the ground shake at work (he was on the second floor). I came home to a few crooked pictures on the wall, some spilled papers, and some toppled books in the library. Other than that, no damage. DD (kindrex) even felt it at her desk in NYC!

I'm heading back out, but will text Beth and make sure she is okay.

My son in Chicago felt it in his office building. I have some family in Va but haven't heard yet. I read 5.9 and that is a pretty strong jolt.

We are OK here. The house was shaking. It was scary. I have felt many in CA, but I have never felt anything like this in Virginia. My neighbors asked my husband and I if we brought it from CA.

Morethanbeige, I didn't realize that you were in Virginia! Glad to hear that you are okay. My son is home now and he was outside when it hit. He said he could feel the earth shaking under his feet and could see the school windows rattling. I still can't believe I didn't feel a thing!

our building was locked down and we were sent home. kind of crazy! it felt kind of like the tower of terror at disney world...before the big big drop. a couple mini drops but no big drop.

It was a bit shocking as I'm an MidWest and East Coast gal who has seen tornadoes and hurricanes, but this was my first earthquake. My office is 1/2 mile from Dulles Airport and my first thought was a plane too low or crashing (I was 1/4 mile from the Pentagon on 9-11 and it was a similar building shake as that plane buzzed our garage). DH's building was evacuated, but ours was not. Lots to talk about around here, but thankfully all are well and only one photo seems to have fallen (and I can't help think that was the cat...)

Glad to hear everyone is doing OK. I was so surprised at how far from the epicenter people were feeling shocks! Debora, I was running to class once when a quake hit and didn't notice it at all; and then was thoroughly confused when all the classrooms of students poured out into the outdoor hallways all at once. I couldn't believe I hadn't felt it, either! Glad you heard from your son and that he's okay.

I am also so relieved that everyone is ok.

( Diana, I am in SE MA, isn't it SO bizarre that people felt it in Boston ? I saw on CNN that there were reports of it being felt in Toronto ! Holy Cow. )

I did not feel it but my co-workers said their desks were shaking - her, in Ontario!
I am so happy nobody was hurt.

So glad everyone is OK. I didn't realize we had so many VA ladies here:)

DH and I thought it was more than ironic that the earthquake interrupted our preparations for the likely hurricane steaming up the coast this weekend.

What's next? Locusts?

So glad you are all ok. Heard it on the news this morning but hadn't been able to log on til now. To be honest I wasn't clear this morning as to where exactly in the US this happened. News just said east coast, I think, but you have all been in my thoughts today.
