We got this last year on the UK, I haven't watched it myself but I know mum loved it. Did you know we (UK) had a new version of upstairs downsatirs on over Christmas? It was fabulous and I've put the DVD on my birthday list hope it makes it's way over to the US for you x
Will watch for this coming to Aus. My sister gave me the complete set of the old Upstairs Downstairs for Christmas and my birthday last year. I watched it over the whole year. Seriously one of the best presents I have every been given! (I had missed quite a lot when it was on TV in the 90s)
And I have been checking out an Upstairs Downstairs web page so I knew about the new one though didn't realise it had actually started airing!
Oh yay! I didn't know this was coming to PBS. (I don't have a TV.) I've heard wonderful things about the series, though. Thanks for the heads up.
Hooray for PBS for putting the episode online for those of us who are internet-only TV watchers. Although I think the cardio machines at my gym have PBS, too.
The new Upstairs Downstairs is set in the period just before WWII broke out in Europe and around the time that King Edward VIII abdicated. It was only 3 episodes and I really enjoyed it too.
You may also be interested in seeing The King's Speech. I saw it last night and it was fantastic. Colin Firth is fantastic and there are actually some very funny moments in it! I can completely understand the Oscar buzz, it is a very subtle film and is beautifully shot.
I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing the remaining episodes. Loved Maggie Smith (my favorite line was "what is a weekend?").
BTW, the new Upstairs Downstairs will be on PBS in April.
Yes, "what is a week-end?" was classic! I don't know how she said that line without cracking up.
Loved it, loved the intrigue, the setting, the Titanic timeframe, the doublecrossing household servants - everything! Even my kids were watching it ... until Thomas wound up making out with ummm, what's his name, the nosy potential "suitor" for Mary. Then the channel mysteriously changed until the kids were ushered upstairs for bedtime ...
Tara, I love your Downton Abbey-inspired outfit. The equestrian-style jacket is fabulous!
My mom and I are really enjoying the show together. Maggie Smith just cracks me up. "What is a week end?" Hehehe. It sounds like she is a pretty feisty/fun lady behind the scenes, too.
I also love the dialogue when she first meets Mrs. Crawley:
"What should we call each other?"
"Well, we could always start with Mrs. Crawley and Lady Grantham."
Just wanted to chime in here to thank Fi for her recommendation of the Kings Speech. Because you had mentioned it here I chose it to watch with DH for our anniversary dinner and movie night out last week. We both really enjoyed it . Thanks!
I read about Downton Abbey about a month ago--found it on Youtube-(in chunks but good!) and sat and watched the whole series in one go at my kitchen table--soo good! And twisty turney too!! Can't wait for season 2!
Ooooh, last night was so JUICY! Full of intrigue. Did anyone else watch? I am so excited for the grand finale next week. If you all were near me we could have a party with drinks served on a silver tray.
