When I live alone, especially when living in an apartment that is newer-type construction (better sealed against dust) I really can go weeks without having to clean because I am a neat person. Since I don't really have allergies (I tend to only be allergic to chemicals and large amounts of mold) I can dust only when it becomes visually distracting, and I don't have to vacuum or mop often (esp. since I am a no-shoes home). With my heart issues, vacuuming and scrubbing are the things that kill me, and I am sensitive to chemicals.
Of course, part of it is because of what people joke about as my "germaphobia"--- let's just say I am not much of an entertainer!
I'm immune deficient and tend to be very thorough with avoiding germs, frequent hand washing, never touching my face in public--- but it is nice to have a place where I don't have to be super vigilant. I try to keep as much of the "ick" out of my home as possible. So shoes usually come off at the door-- things that have been exposed to a lot of germs get set down straight away on a easily disinfected surface so I can sanitize them before they go back to their homes (keys, sunglasses I've had on and off, water bottles I was touching all day-- even my wallet). The first thing I do when I come home is scrub my hands before I touch anything else, and anything that has to be touched to get into the house gets disinfected after I come home for the day and frequently otherwise. I wipe down counters and faucets, door knobs, light switches and the seat surface of the potty frequently and also spray the shower down with disinfectant often (especially if I have been working out or swimming at the gym-- got to kill any nasties that I brought home on my body). I've had a hard time contracting staph infections from weird places before, so known sources of potential staph and viruses I take precautions with. Gym clothes, clothes from the hospital or docs office, ect go straight into the wash with a clothing disinfectant and or hot water. Dishes go straight into the dishwasher or are washed immediately-- I don't need them sitting building extra bacteria that I'm handling, and I like a clean sink.
Of course, when I live with other people, this doesn't always work. I still try to keep some personal space where I can just hang out and not worry about wiping my eyes if I am reading a sappy book, but most ppl don't want to live taking precautions that aren't necessary for them, so I deal with a lot more illness and a lot less "relaxation" in my house. Plus, most of the men in my family wear boots and don't want to take them off all the time and tend to just get dirtier, so I have to clean the dirt more often as well. Where I live now we have a fireplace that is used a lot in the winter, have humidity issues, and dust storms in the summer, plus multiple men, two dogs, and a person that works around children (she is a vector, I swear). I could clean and organize all day, every day and never have the place clean.
