OT: Bought this painting

I went out to stay with my friend's kids this weekend while she was at the Mayo clinic. Their little town is full of art and I immediately loved this painting I spied in an art gallery. Turns out it was painted by my friend's son's best friend who is in college studying art. It was priced low since he's a new artist so I bought it. It has the word "sorrow" in it, which my husband didn't like. There was just something about the composition that I found very compelling.

What do you think?

Art hits you in the heart and eye or it doesn't. If this speaks to you, it was an excellent purchase.

I really like it - I see the chagall influences, he used words in some of his paintings too. It's hard to make out the words, that makes it better for me.

The colors are very pleasing. I can understand why a person would not appreciate the word sorrow in it, but it is an intriguing piece of art. Where will you hang it, home or office?

Art is such a personal thing - and if your DH really is uncomfortable with it you could always bring to office.
Supporting a new artist is really cool and helpful to him too.

I swear I was going to say "reminds me of Kandinsky" before I read Anna's post. I like it a lot.

I love it. It's just my type of art and I too like that you can't really see the words well. Interesting choice too considering your current circumstances. I can see why it spoke to you.

Anna hit it on the head with the comparison to Chagall and Kandinsky. I like it very much...but then I like both of those artist.

I do see the Chagall! Never heard of Kandinsky because I'm not up on art, sadly, but I just looked at some of his art and love it.

The word "sorrow" is actually hard to see IRL. Also, the painting can be rotated and looks different from every angle. We all saw different things in it.

I got to chat with the artist and he said it took him over 2 months to paint this, during last winter when it was really bleak outside. Then he promised me he would not spend the money I paid for it on beer and would use it for college.

I really like it, and I think it's wonderful to support a young artist! Art has to make you *feel* a certain way, IMHO, unless you are operating as a cold-blooded investment collector, which you are not :).

You are enduring a sorrowful time right now, with your friends, so I can see the resonance of this for you. The juxtaposition of so much sorrow, with the beauty and color of life.

It feels very "you," Una. And I agree with the Chagall/ Kandinsky comparisons. I think it is a great thing to support a young artist. It's good karma. And you know what? Sorrow is part of life, and without it, we could not taste the joy.

I have to agree that art either strikes you or it doesn't, and if this piece struck you then it was a fabulous decision to purchase. And how great that you met the artist and can support new talent. A very worthwhile purchase!
