OT - Books About Animals That We've Loved

List here some of your all time favorite books about animals, the favorite single topic of my childhood reading.

I had thought about starting this topic after Kari had started another book thread a while back, and today Una mentioned "All Creatures Great and Small" on another thread, which was one of my favorite childhood reads. I devoured those three James Herriott books about his life as a rural veterinarian, never wanting them to end.

Claudia, thank you for this list; my daughter's right in the big stage of reading books about animals and some of these she has not yet found. I will send her to them.

Here in Canada, I also read Farley Mowat's animal books: Never Cry Wolf, The Dog Who Wouldn't Be, An Owl in the House.

There is also Watership Down. Daughter just finished that one.

I liked a book called Park Avenue Vet. I have no idea where I discovered it. Very funny stories about wealthy Manhattanites and their animals.

I also remember loving this one: A Cat in the WIndow

I read "Where the red fern grows" multiple times as a kid. Got me everytime.

I'm afraid the animal books I read were practical care and feeding type books... how to examine a horse's hooves without getting kicked, kinda thing... but I have to put out there *Misty of Chincoteague* because it was my mom's favourite book and she made me read it.

I particularly remember two books told from the point of view of cats. One was Snot Stew, which followed the lives of two domestic barn kittens. I can't remember the name of the other, but the narrator was a female feral/stray/bob-cat. That's how I learned that mating is no big fun for female felines!

I also loved Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, the Dr. Doolittle books, and a book who's name I forget about the first Arabian horse in Europe (or America?).

The Oz and Narnia books had great animal characters, as well.

There are SO many! My newest favorite is 'Sheep in a Jeep' by Nancy Shaw.

I gotta add 'A Dog's Purpose' by W. Bruce Cameron ...it's been a bestseller in the NY Times for months and also 'Mondo Canine' a collection of short stories, both sad and funny by Jon Winokur. LOVE both! Also any book by Victoria Stillwell for great training tips and insights on dogs

The only books I read about animals are nonfiction

The Culture Clash

to name a few. These are all about training and behavior.
