OT - Birthstone?

My little girl is 2 1/2 weeks old (I can't believe it, it seems like she has always been here) and things are going well - as in she is sleeping, eating and filling her nappies, so doing all the things a newborn should!

I want to get her something to mark her birth, something that she will always have - so we have decided that we would like to get her a piece of jewelery and I thought that it would be good to get her something with her birthstone. However, this has turned out to be a bit of a nightmare as I can't work out what her birthstone is! According to Wikipedia it could be, Amethyst (if you go by the stone associated with her zodiac sign), or bloodstone, jasper or aquamarine according to the stones associated with her birth month - March.

So what should I choose? Obviously aquamarine and amethyst are the most practical for jewelery purposes...

I think aquamarine is the more commonly accepted birthstone for March -- if there is such a thing. When I took my daughter to get her ears pierced recently, they had all the birthstone earrings on the little display case, March was light blue, which I'm assuming is aquamarine.

Pick the one that is the most beautiful to you. LIttle girls love anything lavender or purple. I would go with the Amethyst because I think she will want to wear it all the time.

What kind of jewelry are you going to get her? My daughter is just under 3. She's already broken 2 gold necklaces that were gifts from relatives. She has emerald earrings (another gift from well meaning relatives), but I'm not ready to get her ears pierced. Rings are a choking hazard, bracelets fall off and get in the way. For us it was definitely too early to get real jewelry. Why not let her pick something out for herself when she's 5 or so. She will love it and appreciate it then.

I would go with the stone you like better as it looks like all of them have some relation to her birth. Aquamarine is a fun stone as it changes the color with the light - I remember having a ring with it as a teenager and I liked it a lot). Jasper can be also fun as they tend to be pretty unique in patterns...

I was thinking of just getting her something now, but not give it to her until she is much older (say 13 for example). Another option is to buy the stone and then she have have something made of her choosing for a birthday present.

My daughter was born in Feb, my son in March, and I've always understood their birthstones to be Amethyst (Feb) and Aquamarine (March), which they both love. We bought my daughter a traditional name bracelet, and it still fits her now that she is 11, although she doesn't wear it anymore. It looked cute in her pics, and as far as I am aware, was not a hazard. My birth gift was a little gold name brooch....I foolishly let a boyfriend have it when I was 16 and never got it back :(.

I am a March baby and always understood my birthstone to be aquamarine.

Congrats on the baby! I do think that aquamarine is the most accepted birthstone for March. Additionally, I definitely know that amethyst is closely associated with February.

I personally love aquamarine, and I find that it is a very neutral stone because the color goes with pretty much everything. She will be able to wear it always.
