OT: Bedding recommendations?

I guess this is semi-fashion related, it's just about dressing my bed instead of me :p

As I have mentioned, I am dismayed that my comforter is dry clean only, as things get dirty fast here and I definitely don't have the income to dry clean an entire quilt every month or so.

Given that I probably couldn't fit a comforter or quilt in the washing machine anyway, I think the best solution would be for me to get a few duvet covers that I can toss in the wash. However, I need something to go *in* the duvet covers. Does anyone have any recommendations? I run pretty warm when I sleep so I'm not crazy about down or down alternative, and most seem to be one or the other.

My bed is a full-sized bed, FWIW.

Cuddledown has a range of temperature ranges in all their comforters and a range of prices. Do not look at there Eiderdown.

fwiw, i think you're plan to get duvet covers is a good one. our wedding registry specialist recommended that we do that as well. but my down comforter is pretty warm so i have no recommendations unfortunately.

I recommend the duvet cover option. It's much easier to wash. As for down comforters I suggest getting the "summer weight" option unless you live in a very cold climate. We have this weight and it's plenty warm enough!

The Company Store is a good option for where to buy comforters. Look for sales!

Yeah, mine is a down comforter. (I use an Ikea duvet cover.) But it doesn't usually get very hot in summers here, and I get *very* chilly when I'm sleeping.

When I was in college, I had a cheap comforter that didn't have a cover and was dry clean only. Rather than dry cleaning, what I did was to take my top sheet and sew tiny snaps on to both the top edge of the top sheet and the bottom edge of the comforter. That way, the comforter was protected and didn't come into contact with me (unless I was lying on top of the bed without getting under the covers, in which case I had a washable blanket on top of the bed) and I only had to wash the sheets.

Ikea has tons of comforters at very affordable prices, you can choose the level of warmth:

They also have many many duvet covers and matching pillowcases. All our bed linen comes from IKEA and we are very happy with the quality.

If you go down this road, I would also recommend a bedspread (we use the Indira:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/cata.....s/60191761), that you put over the bed each morning as you make it and remove at night before you go to bed. It keeps your bed fresh and clean especially since you have a studio and I assume spend a lot of time sitting, working on your bed.

Ikea is probably a good route; I think they have some very light ones.

You could also sleep with just the comforter cover as a blanket, especially in the summer...I've done that before.

I use a duvet with a fairly lightweight down comforter and am generally comfortable with it most of the year in my overheated apartment, so I think if you get a lightweight one you should be ok. Another option would be to just put the duvet over your existing regular comforter, if you are happy with the warmth/weight of that one.

My only recommendation is to avoid the Company Store. I had a truly horrible customer service with them and ended up having part of my order arrive in the right place on time, part of my order sent to the place where I no longer lived (on the other side of the country) and then forwarded to me at my expense, and part of my order arrive 2 months after the rest. The kicker was that once the order was placed, there was no way to cancel it, stop the shipments, and replace the order because of the way their computer system works and the fact that the items were on sale. And all of this happened after they canceled part of my first order because one of the items online was no longer available. It was awful.

Is your washer/dryer mini-sized? I have a stackable, and it is pretty small, but I can still get a quilt in there. I used to have a comforter with duvet cover, but I stopped for a couple of reasons--even though I sewed ties to the cover and comforter, the comforter was always shifting around in there. Also, with the cats, eventually their fur would get on the comforter, so after awhile it did need to be dry-cleaned, which is just so expensive. Since I run warm, I found that a lightweight quilt was the best choice. I can clean it as often as I want, it was less expensive than a comforter, and I'm not kicking it off in the middle of the night. I know that wasn't your real question, but just my two cents.

I just use a lightweight bedspread year-round (even though I live in Minnesota) and use a throw on top that can easily be removed if I get too warm....thats worked best for me. I also wanted to give you and everyone a word of warning about JCP Microfiber sheets- so soft, but the elastic is so bad they wont stay on! aarrgghh....I tried 3 sets with the same results from all of them...

I'm a quilt person. In the winter, flannel sheets and extra throw blankets do the trick.

You may just want to put a light weight blanket in the duvet cover or use it as is for summer. Marshalls/TJMaxx/HomeGoods can have some good bedding bargains.
Another warning: Kohl's Vera Wang brand sheets pill and lint up so badly that they feel like sandpaper..horrible! Read the reviews.

I've used overstock.com for all our duvet inserts. TONS of options in different weights and the best price points I've seen for the quality. I do recommend goose down (vs. synthetic) but you can pick ones for warmer weather, just make sure you get a quilted one (this means that there is stitching throughout the feather bed to make sure that the feathers stay evenly distributed rather than clumping into spots)--the more quilted, the better!
