OT - Ask Greg - Poll Function

Hi Greg,

I was just wondering if you and Angie had any plans to add a poll feature to the forum so that people can vote on outfit choices as well as post justifications in the comments?

That would be a fun feature! Are you still operating on a Wordpress platform? If so, don't they have a poling functionality built in even for non-premium accounts?

ooh, I like this idea. Something that could rate our outfits on a scale of 1 to 5 maybe? Is that what you mean Fi?

I was thinking more along the lines of questions we could design ourselves (or perhaps using the critical rating system if it was going to be standardised).

I just thought of the idea as I was looking at Rute's post and someone commented on the tally of the results.

I actually don't like this idea. Something as subjective as fashion reduced to numbers, no thank you.

Except that some forum members already ask for comments in this manner for example keep and return posts and vote on your favourite xyz - I would think of it as a compliment to the comments feature rather than a stand alone feature. I would think that almost everyone would comment as well as vote (or would even decline to vote if they couldn't design).

The answer is yes (sort of). There is one specific thing we are working on that will have a polling component, but I can't say any more about that one yet.

For polls on outfits in general, Angie and I have talked about this often and just haven't nailed down the specifics. We've always been a little concerned about the (potentially negative) dynamics of quantified feedback.

Polling could mean a simple "yay or nay" vote, or it could be a rating system like Queen Mum describes. I would love to hear any and all opinions on what you'd prefer.

Michelle, yes the core of YLF is based on Wordpress and there are quite a few plugins for Wordpress that do polling, but with this sort of thing I typically end up doing custom code to make the user experience do exactly what we think it should do.

Thanks for getting back so quickly Greg (ps hope that Santa Angie was as generous as Santa Greg!).

I would definitely see it as an optional feature. I wonder if the negative impact of comments could be negated by either only being able to vote if you are an active or veteran member or only if you add a comment as well. I can see why you would want to be cautious though.

I can't wait to see where you are going to take YLF this year!

annagybe, I posted before seeing your post, and yes, that is definitely a concern. What might work is a system where the original poster can choose whether or not they want a poll attached.

Also, we could use the constructive rating system that Patience proposed (still a sticky thread).
