What a fun project! (It's every girl's dream. Squee!)
I think ManidipaM's advice is spot on: If the curtains are open, you don't want the color of your clothes to clash with the curtains and wall color. Don't forget to think about the lighting/window and placement of a long mirror, too.
I think if you're set on the zebra curtains, I'd wonder about creating different atmospheres, like so:
- calming: a soft, light wall color like a pale green, baby yellow or soft beige, a big landscape picture on the wall, a white upholstered chair
- luxurious: dark blue, bright red, bright pink, or yellow grey walls, several gold framed pictures, maybe a bench or big pouf made of leather, large mirror with golden ornamental frame
- girly: pink, red or orange walls, maybe a chandelier, a voluminous chair, a small table with flowers
- minimalist/practical: white or light grey walls (to match the white and silver from the ikea shelves), a wooden chair, a modern painting with a thin silver frame, mirror with wooden frame
... you get the idea
There are two tools I have enjoyed a lot for finding new and exciting color combinations (they're fun for outfits, too!):
1. http://bighugelabs.com/colors.php - you input a photo/picture you like, and they extract the main colors from it (you could do this with a picture of your closet!)
2. http://www.swatchspot.com - generates random color palettes or combinations based on several colors you choose
Have fun with this project!
