Orphan beaded sash thingie - keep/giveaway -any ideas?

This was given to me a loooong time ago and I've always been mystified by it. It's a bit heavy because it's all beads. Do you wear it as a belt? A scarf? It's an awkward length for a belt because in order for it to stay tied, you'd need to knot it twice (I only knotted it once in the pic). And around the neck it's heavy.

I like the pattern and colors but I have no clue how to make it work. Pass it on? Or do you have any creative ideas on how to use it?

I just tried tying it around my neck like a loose Windsor knot -- that kinda works...

Janet, this is beautiful....I was about to ask about tying it like a necktie. If that works, problem solved. Is it long enough?

another solution might be sewing it as embellshment on ...a tote bag? or something?

Janet, I have an old beaded belt- mine is sort of bronzy beads, not colorful like yours- that I wear as a scarf. I get more compliments on it! I know what you're saying about the weight, but with a really simple outfit yours could be outstanding!

It looks nice as a sash, too. I don't know if you could pin it so it would stay put, since it's not long enough to tie twice.

Can you loop it through your pant belt loops and tie on your right hip?

Oh my God, I love it. It looks like a handmade native piece - just beautiful beading. I think you're right to pair it with something understated like your white shirt to let it shine. Around the neck looks brilliant, Janet!

this'll sound kind of crazy, but depending on your style, could you take it to a dressmaker (or do it yourself if you're talented that way), and have them make a large messenger bag/purse using the beaded strap as the bag's strap?

or you could take up playing guitar and have it made into a guitar strap!

I'm wondering about tying it to a 'classic' type of handbag just to add a bit of whimsy. I would definitely keep this, just a matter of figuring out how to wear it and integrate it into your style.

It's definitely a work of art....and those are sometimes hard to wear. It would be beautiful sewn around the top of a straw tote for summer (if it was exactly the right size). Easier said than done. :/

I think it's gorgeous as a belt, as you've styled it with the white blouse. Perhaps you could wear it like that with a knit top, a very thin sweater, a knit dress or tunic in a plain color. You could also lay it across a dresser or small table to show it off when you're not wearing it.

It's very pretty but it doesn't look like your style. Can you incorporate into some home decor? Stitch it onto a pillow? Drape it over a mirror? It would make a cool beaded cuff but I wouldn't know how to even begin....

I love it--- I would wear it outside the collar kind of like an untied man's bowtie, or . . . . I would have it turned into a hatband for a nice felt or straw hat--- it should wrap around and then maybe have some room for a knot, even some pleating. A good seamstress should be able to work with it.

It's unique! I like it as a belt or loosely knotted around the neck.

i think rather than tying it on, it might be worth a shot to have a buckle affixed to wear it as a belt. Not the kind of buckle that uses a prong, of course --- more a box frame or slide style. And ideally then add a backing to the sash (leather? velvet) to prevent damage to the actual beading. If you get a backing that's not too smooth (silky) and a buckle the right size, you shouldn't have a problem with it staying put in place once fastened.

Alternatively, a clasp fastening might work too, if you add backing and then fold over the ends into loops that hold the two sides of the clasp and shorten the belt to the right size as well (rather like an airline seatbelt, if that helps visualize this better).

Of course if you DO add backing, it might be worth considering adding tassels or braid as fasteners at the ends, and then tying it on diagonally, much like a swashbuckling sword belt --- unless that's frightfully too bohemian or pirate for you!

I have a belt that is exactly the same material. I got it at H&M years ago, when it first opened in NYC. It has two leather inserts, at each end, with a buckle, I can snap a picture when I get home. Maybe this is something a cobbler can do on the cheap.
ETA: You could even "frankenstein" a old belt to this sash!
