Ornaments for light coloured hair

My ‘bangs’ or the front pieces of my hair are long-ish, and when I’m cooking or exercising - I like to clip them back. The problem is, I can’t find any barrettes, clips, or claws in ivory or a pale beige colour. The black or dark brown tortoise ornaments commonly available are quite harsh looking against my hair colour, and the coloured ones feel childish.

I think I’ve been looking for…something…for over 3 years! In the interim, I use a bobby pin, or braid a small section away from my face and tie it off with a small hair elastic. I sometimes do a ponytail- but my hair is on the shorter side, and it’s the front and side bits that slip out and hang in my face!

Try plain gold! That will disappear in your hair.

I don't mind them sticking out. I wear them like you do, for chores and putting on make up, or I will also wear them for going out. I have two sets from CVS--one all burgundy, and one mixed.

If I wanted them to blend more, I would just google "cream hair clips," "toffee hair clips," whatever color you want.

When I was growing my hair out, I needed barrettes/bobby pins. I wanted ones that kind of disappeared, these are some that I tried. They’re all white and grey. I also tried head bands. My bangs are completely grown out and so I don’t need them anymore.

Would rose gold clips work? I had some rose gold bobby pins when I was doing strawberry blonde.

I found some bobby pins in a gold-ish blonde-ish color, maybe at Target? Years ago. They don't really show much. I believe they were a name brand so someplace like Amazon would have them.

DIY a clip that works for you with fingernail polish or craft paint in a color that blends in! (I would prep the surface with a light sanding first)

My daughter has tons of claws and clips and other long - hair things in all sorts of soft , matte “ nude” colours . Lots of retailers carry them - like Anthro for one . Winners , Marshalls etc would also be a good place to look .

I would try clothing stores ... Reitmans, Lululemon, Dynamite, maybe even Ardene might have good options ... For elastics or Bobby pins, dance stores have them for a range of hair colours.

For years I used a variety of big barrettes to put my hair in a ponytail. The brand was France Luxe, and it's available on Amazon. They come in different sizes and colors, and the quality is very good.

I agree with the suggestions re: Amazon and Winners. I see a lot of sets that have a range of neutrals from light to black, and it might actually be cheaper to buy those than individual sets in your colours. If you come shopping downtown, there are Asian beauty stores in the Eaton Centre that have a lot of hair accessories. I’d also check H&M. A lot of the teen market stores (Garage, AE) also have hair accessories near the cash line. Honestly this one category of ‘basic’ item that’d I say the typical mall has covered and then some. I’m a bit of a magpie about hair accessories and in those stores a lot with my kids and had to restrain myself when I had short hair.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I’ve been looking in the hair dept of the pharmacies and grocery store and only finding dark versions. Will expand my search.

I feel that Reitman's has kicked it up a notch this season . I haven't been into a store, but the ads I see on social media show lots of interesting pieces! Someone needed to step up and sell modern/trend aware clothing in Canada at moderate prices. Glad they are doing this.

I agree Lisa! They always have a few winners. If you follow Alexis Honce, she's good for doing round ups of a few pieces worth trying I find.

Sally's Beauty Supply has bobby pins in 5 colors, I believe blonde, gray/silver, medium brown, and either dark brown or reddish (it's been a while since I looked). They're not decorative but I remember that it's the only place I've consistently seen pins for blonde and gray hair.

Plus they offer them in 3 lengths. I practically only use the smallest ones now, and my hair is hip length. They are 1" long but hold very firmly and don't need to grab a huge amount of hair, so they are comfortable to insert and wear all day.
