Organizing your hosiery

How do you all organize your hosiery? I have most of mine either rolled up or folded into the plastic sleeves they come in. Then they're all tossed in a drawer.

But I'm accumulating enough that it's tough to distinguish all of the varieties, especially the dark colors, and especially at 7am.

Is there a better way?

Drawer dividers? I don't have much myself, so mine is just thrown in a basket, but that's my first thought. You could divide by color

I do the same thing....keep them in the sleeve packaging. Hmmm...it is a VERY good question and I am SO looking forward to reading any helpful tips on organizing them.

Mine are just all in a drawer folded up, but I only have a few pair. If you're having a hard time distinguishing, could you get some sort of container for each pair (tupperware type), and put a close up photo on the outside of each box so that you can see what's in it??

Khris, I do like that idea. You should see me, running late in the morning, rooting around in my drawer, muttering "no, not the polka dots, not the diamonds, THERE they are! Oops no, wrong ones...those are the argyle...Aaaack!"

Gotta streamline the morning routine. :O

Honestly (and I do NOT do this myself but wish I did) your best bet is to pick out your outfit the night before. I like the idea of drawer dividers (I have so few I do not use any), but separating colors is one thing...separating patterns within the same color family is going to be aggravating no matter what at 7 am.

i need to organize mine too. i have thought of getting a large plastic shoe box type container and rolling them up and placing them in that

Honestly MPJ, I think the only way to get me going in the morning is to simply get dressed and groomed the night before and sleep in the corner, standing up!

From time to time I purge my hosiery that gets shabby looking. I don't have the space for a lot of extra pairs, so I only work with a few at a time. That's just me. PS they are folded in the corner of my sock draw.

I use one of those hanging sweater shelf thingies with the vertical compartments, with all my underthings divided by type. All thin black socks go into one segment, black tights in another, gray or colored socks in another, and so on.

I find it much easier to see what I have when I can walk up to it, rather than having to dig through a drawer anymore. Would probably also work nicely for accessories. The one I have has 8 sections.

I will caution though that I'm of small build with small feet, so I can stuff a goodly amount of socks into this thing. Other more normal size people (or those with big sock/foundation collections) might need more than one of these units side by side?

The other thing is, I got so frustrated over the years with having a hard-to-wear collection of very varied hosiery, so I grew my stash of basic black items and only have a sprinkling of other things. Keeping the types of items separate with all this black is critical then for obvious reasons!

Mine are all tossed willy-nilly into a great big bin, which is not good at all. I wonder if a men's tie rack might not be a good idea, or would the tights just slip off? I was thinking about getting one for belts anyway, so I may try hanging the tights on that.

Top draw folded. I don't have too much problem finding what I want. I store them so that I can see the pattern. In summer I take them out of the draw (making sure that I throw away any with tiny ladders that I have shoved back in the draw in frustration) and store them away in those pockets you can use for packing suitcases.

I use plastic zip-loc bags (one pair in a bag), filed in a lg. plastic shoe box, and try not to have too many pairs at a time. Right now I've got 2 pr. plain black, 1 dk brown, 1 micro fishnet in black and 2 in nude plus 2 pair of nude stockings usually used for layering for warmth. I used to have many more but found it more manageable to edit. I hand wash and hang to dry immediately after wearing. They seem to last longer and are ready the next time I want them.
Sometimes a pair gets stored with boots I usually pair them with.

I knot mine and keep them in my sock drawer - which is large and flat so I can clearly see what's what.

Angie, out of curiosity, why do you knot them?

Beth, I keep browns and blacks separated (I have very few browns, so they get thrown in a slim drawer, but my blacks are harder to organize.) I did the same thing with them that I did with my camis, which is to fold them and "stand them up" like this: http://i649.photobucket.com/al.....G_0886.jpg

The basic technique came from a great folding video that AJ posted: http://www.cardiganempire.com/.....lding.html Very useful, though, as I have said before, I am deeply amused by the thought of ever folding a thong. (Why would you bother?)

Mine are rolled and popped into a narrow shoe box that fits inside my drawer, there is an identical one next to it with rolled socks and another on a shelf with scarves.

I loop them over hangers.

I have one hanger for coloured opaques, one for black and patterned black, one for fishnets and one for stayups and stockings. I have too many to keep neat in a drawer and this way I can pull one hanger out and choose between the categories.

I like the ideas here...my tights are a little jumbled and that bugs me, as I like things orderly to the annoying enth degree...I am loving Joy's idea of plastic zip bags..and Angies. knotting...I may knot them and bag them:)

Beth, mine are crammed (and I mean crammed) in my sock drawer. I'm a pretty neat person, but you would never know it by my sock drawer.

DD has a ton of tights and bought one of those hanging organizers with clear plastic pockets from Stein Mart when she was home for Christmas. I think it is actually for hair supplies, but the pockets looked roomy enough to hold several pairs apiece. I will have to ask her if she has tried it out yet.

Interesting ideas. The biggest issue for me is just sorting through all my black hose as I can't quickly tell what texture they are. I think I might try the labeled ziplock idea or possibly Deb's hanging organizer with labels on them.

April, you don't fold your thongs? I do, after carefully ironing each pair.

I am a thong folder. I admit it. I am also a serial ironer. Even slightly shabby thrifted items look much nicer with a good press.

I have mine rolled up in a shallow drawer. They are lined up by color and I also have different rows for solids and patterns. I do have to unroll the patterned ones to see which pattern they are so it is not a perfect solution, but it works well for me.

Mine are crammed in their own special drawer...so you'd think they'd be nicer organized in it....

I have a friend who knots all of her pairs on a hanger though. Seems like an easy organized fix for finding what you're looking for.

Beth, like you I have mine in their original plastic sleeve. To know which is which I write on small labels descriptions such as "black fishnet" or "gray plain" and stick the label onto the plastic. It has been working for me.

I don't have that many so they are just folded and lined up in a drawer. I think labeling in plastic bags is a great idea if you have many pairs.

OT - I used the folding method from that video that April mentioned to pack my family of five for our recent trip (I ironed as needed) and I was shocked how much more I could fit into the suitcase and how easy it was to see everything!
