Orange versus Red

I purchased one of Angie's recommendations from Nordstorms. The color was identified as red, but when I pulled it out of the package, it was undeniable orange. I am a little bit confused. Are orange items being labelled as red? Or is it me?

I am sure the blazer is gorgeous, but I am not going to bother to try it on because orange is not something I want in my wardrobe. Yes. I am disappointed...and maybe a bit mad. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Did it look red on the photo on the website? Perhaps you could photgraph it to show us as well? I would get in touch with them about it though.

I wouldn't be mad -- colour is pretty subjective, after all. Some other cultures don't even distinguish between green and blue, they are all the "same" colour (physically their eyes do perceive the difference in spectrum, but in a semiotic way they are coded in the same fashion).

You maybe just got a red that is on the outlier of the spectrum so that it falls into your category of orange, whereas someone else would still call it red.

I've also had this happen to me, wanting a true red dress and ending up with red-orange. It is disappointing when you have your mind set on a certain thing and get something else.

Red has a range from orange-y red to bluish-red. I am like you you....I consider anything on the orange-y end of the spectrum to be orange, rather than red.

Don't get me started on the chaos that is the naming of all the shades of coral going on these days.

I have the same issue with many colors. There are no real standards and people just call colors whatever strikes their fancy. I've even seen something called dark black. As opposed to.....what? light black? You mean GRAY?

How orange is it? Could it be considered and orangey red? Not that it matters if you don't want the color. I'm just curious.

I'm guessing that the photo made the jacket look more red. And then the copy was written by someone who was only viewing the photograph, and not the actual jacket. There is also a possibility that the buyer chose "red", but the manufacturer either got the order wrong, or their dyes aren't consistent. It's also possible that the jacket was manufactured in both red and orange, and the packaging had the wrong label applied at some point along the chain.
