Opaque black tights

It seems the b&m stores around here only carry control top tights which I don't wear. I finally found a pair of normal tights at the grocery store (Joe Fresh brand) which fit well and are not control top. They are not a true opaque though. I cannot wear them with a skirt as they become sheer only at the heels and kness as well as slightly on the calves. While I will keep them for under my pants do you have any recommendations for a truly non control top opaque tight?

I have some from Ann Taylor that are truly opaque. The waist is a little too high for my taste but I can live with that, and the legs are nice and long. The fabric has a nice, slightly shiny finish.

My tip for opaque tights is to size up. I always do it anyway for comfort (and because my long leg/pear shaped proportions mean that the height/weight charts for tights are off anyway) but it's most important for opaques so they don't have to stretch as much.

I had good luck with the fleece lined tights from Rickis last year. I think I sized up.

I have several style books by Nina Garcia (of Elle Magazine and Project Runway fame) -- great books, by the way -- and she waxes poetic about Wolford opaque black tights (Matte Opaque 80). According to her, their "unique knitting system ensures maximum opaqueness, comfort, and durability." They are an investment - $55 a pair - but right now it is Friends and Family at Saks and you can save 25%. I've never taken the plunge but with this savings and her endorsement, I just might. I had same problem even with sheer nude ph. site I am going to try too is Alex blake.com they seem to have a lot of choices. but have not ordered from them yet.

I have some from Talbots I really like. Thick, opaque, and generously sized. Do not size up!

I also bought a pair from Hanes last year. They advertised them as tights that could be worn as leggings. They could not be worn as leggings, but they were nice and thick, compeltely opaque, and without the control top.

Ditto Diana. I picked up a bunch of the AT ones on sale at the end of the season last year. I think they were $2 after discount. Unfortunately, I should have sized up two sizes, not just one. They are plenty opaque, but still a little too controlling for me.

Ditto on the Wolford. BF bought me a pair of the Velvet tights in black (I think they are 66 denier), two years ago. I always hand-wash them, and they have held up beautifully. I've worn them at least 30 times. Wolfords are definitely worth the money.

I also have a pair by Jessica Simpson that I got at Marshall's, that have really held up well, too.

Have you tried Hue? They are quite opaque and wear really well. I like the control top but I know you can get them in regular. Amazon.com also carries them. They run TTS and I would not size up otherwise there is too much fabric. I also like the AT tights.

Commando! They are the most comfortable things I've ever tried, and I'm with you, I hate control top. These are not, plus they have some kind of no waistband thing that doesn't dig in at all. And they are very opaque!

Planning a trip to the big mall. Never been in Ricki's but will check them out now for sure. I haven't seen Hue in the non control top but will ask when I go shopping this time. Never thought of Talbots Thistle, thanks.

I'll see what they have at the mall, I'm sure I'll find something now using your great advice.

I also hate the control top ones, they are very uncomfortable. Like Gryffin, I like Hue. Some are opaque and some are super opaque. Most come in control top but some do not. The regular ones (non-control top) are pretty, comfortable, durable and come in multiple colors. I highly recommend them.

I hear you on restricting tops!
Have you tried to double up the tights - wear two pairs in the same time? This would add to the opaqueness and also adds warmth. If both pairs are not control top they should be comfortable enough.

Sveta since I only own the one pair right now I will wait and try that at a later date.

Was at the mall today but never even looked at tights...geesh. Ran out of time as I was buying more cashmere sweaters during their sale.

I am on board with Emily, Ricki's plush lined tights are great. They are warm, opaque and they come in I think two other colors and they have no control waist band.

I hate control tops too. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I love the Hue non-control tops. There's a sock store near me that carries them, luckily. And I have one pair of Commando tights and they are amazing. If I find myself wearing tights a lot this winter I'll splurge on another pair.

Glory I got my cashmere sweaters at The Bay. They are having their Bay Days right now so they are a good price at 40% off. I saw the most amazing tunic. Everything was perfect except the short, wide scoop neck so it stayed there. Sigh. That one is hidden away and not on the web...

i happen to love my spanx!!! wonderful. yes, a bit high waisted, but, they get the job done, warm, hold ya in where ya need it (at least for me that is) and opaque.

Commandos have a big wide waistband that is the most comfortable waist I've ever seen on tights. Instead of elastic, it's a wide band of slightly thicker knit. I hate tight things on my tummy.

They do go up rather high on the waist, by necessity.

They're also $30 instead of $10... But writing this made me realize how much more I like them. I need new tights so I think the next will be commando!

Do they have Topshop where you are? Their 120denier tights are great! Another choice is H&M but they're not as opaque...
