One piece capsule?

I have been thinking about all of the wardrobe and capsule conversations that have been taking place lately. Has anyone ever chosen one article of clothing and made as many outfits as possible with that piece and the rest of their closet? Would it be called a capsule? I bought a new pair of pants this afternoon and as I sat here the question popped into my head, how many outfits could I create around that one piece?

Has there been discussions about this before?

I don't know if it would be a capsule but that is pretty much how I dress. I often fall madly in love with something new and wear it endlessly. This summer it has been a pair of jeans that I died burgundy and a pair of red ballet flats. The shoes probably don't count though because isn't that how everyone wears their shoes...with as many outfits as possible.

Tracina, that is a great color on the jeans. Did they bleed when you washed them? I have never dyed jeans before.

I think it's one way of finding out if an item is versatile enough to be part of a capsule. I think of a capsule as being a group that can be mixed and matched. My white jeans are supremely versatile but I can't wear them every day--I alternate them with different washes. I have an informal summer casual capsule and it's basically a bunch of different bottoms that mix with all of the same tops. Just my 2 cents.

ETA: I, for the life of me, only get one wear out of my white jeans. They get dirty SO fast!

I do this when I buy something new - to make sure it fits in with the other clothing in my wardrobe but my take is a capsule would need to include more than one bottom.

Deb, I haven't had any trouble with the jeans but I always wash with cold water and I don't wash my jeans that often. I did a salt/vinegar rinse right after the die bath.

Okay - onto your question, Deb. Beth Ann is genius at this. This is how she figures out how to make her wardrobe more versatile. She'll spend half an hour or so with one item and other stuff in the closet, just playing. I don't think this counts as a "capsule" but it is a terrific way to learn how to make your wardrobe work well for you.
