Oh, Nancy. First, I didn't even know you were a fiction writer, and to have gotten your story published in a prestigious lit mag is such an amazing feat. I wish we didn't all feel like it's shameless self-promotion to let others know about these triumphs, because it really involves talent and persistence!

I read the story just now and it's beautiful, spare and memorable. As a rudimentary sailor, I was floored and delighted by this sentence: "Their breakup had not been a straight plummet, but more a series of tacks toward the inevitable." Wow!

My three published short stories all came out way before online publication became standard. I am now thinking I should set up a blog or webpage and post them there, so I can direct people to them. A lot of initial set-up work, but then I would have some presence. One of them needs an update/rewrite, but I'm proud of them all. We really have major talent here at YLF! Suz, I have too much to say about your piece and it's got me too blown away to adequately respond to it.

Mochi, thanks so much. It's always so interesting to hear which sentences/images resonate with readers. I grew up around sailboats on Lake Ontario (my dad was an avid sailor) so I picked up a lot of sailing jargon early on. And I hear you on the frustration of published pieces that aren't available online. Right now, I make hard copies of my older stories to hand out...but your idea of setting up a webpage is a great one. It's becoming more important for artists/writers to have a web "platform" for their work.

Thanks for sharing this. As a writer myself, I know how hard is is to promote yourself. Personally, I often feel a huge disconnect between the private isolation of the writing process and the public exposure of having the work out there. Good for you for taking that risk! (And of course, you know you're among friends here.)

Setting up your own website can be easy and relatively inexpensive, and it really is a necessity these days. I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Nancy thank you for leading me to your story. I do sympathize a lot with the difficulty of self promotion (I don't have anything to promote but can imagine!).
