I’m still trying to get the hang of this for Florida. Seems to me these boots go with this dress, but I had them both when we lived in Florida, never could figure out how to wear the boots there. Are the really going to be too much? I’m planning to buy sandals while we are there; maybe they’ll go better with the dress. Also, does the neckline need some kind of necklace?

It sounds like maybe you're packing for a trip? If so, how many pairs of shoes are you taking, and are you wearing these shoes with any of the other outfits? I generally only pack shoes that go with several outfits (unless I have lots of space or suitcase weight isn't an issue).

I personally would do a lighter shoe with this dress (lighter in color and visual weight), because with so much skin showing (neck, arms, legs) the heavy dark boot at the "bottom" of the look seems proportionally off to my eye. Some people like the high-contrast look of lots of bare leg with a heavy shoe, but it's not my favorite.

The pattern and colors go together well. It's just the overall heaviness of the bootie with a sundress, I think. If the booties were lower contrast, I think it would work better. At least that's my experience. Sundress is cute!

The boots look seasonally mismatched with the dress, and having spent a good bit of time in the Deep South, I can’t imagine wanting my feet encased in boots while wearing a summer dress. I think you will want sandals or breathable flats or sneakers for this.

It seems like the boots would be too warm. We were in Florida in February last year, and it was hot!

Liz, thanks for the detailed comment on the boot, color, and bare leg! I am indeed packing for a trip, thought I’d been overrunning the forum with pre-planning, but your comment suggests I haven’t. Thanks! I don’t know yet exactly what clothing and shoes I’ll be taking (have to plan them together), other than that I’ll buy sandals there.

I’m one of those people who has hard time with sundresses and boots...the northern girl in me says if its warm enough to for a sundress its too warm for boots, but then i see nothing wrong with a sweater and shorts...so clearly we each have our own poison eyes. I would love to see this with sneaker.

Echoing what Liza said, my eye goes straight to your feet when I look at your photos, FI. I think footwear in a lighter color is the way to go. The dress has a great pattern so I don't think you need a necklace to punch up the look. Also, I can't stand anything around my neck if the weather is very warm.

I can see this dress with sneakers or sandals, no jewellery needed. I can also see this dress with the boots and a big necklace going out to be funky-artsy in Miami and maybe even a little light rhumba. I, of course, wouldn’t leave my hair down for that... and we all know I’m kooky. I mean, my boss once saw me in harem pants and was surprised I was ‘dressed so normal and subdued.’ Lol. I was all *how dare you!* Lol. And it has to be said, I probably wouldn’t do it in, like, Tampa... I don’t know where to find funky-artsy places to go in Tampa...

Rachylou, I don’t think my hair is coming down the whole ten days we will be there! Great ideas for going-out ‘fits and activities. I can’t think of a single “artsy funky” place in Tampa, which is odd, considering how international it is.

I agree with others — boots seem to visually heavy for the short dress.

Do you know the blog Not Dead Yet Style? The blogger lives in Florida and I am pretty sure she has some outfits with boots. You might browse her outfit posts to see how she styles them.

Although I guess you’re really trying to figure out what to wear with the sundress, huh? She tends to keep her hemlines on the longer side. Nevertheless, might be a good browse for ideas about warm weather outfits that aren’t skimpy and have some interest (vs just...it’s hot so I’m wearing as few clothes as possible, iykwim)

I personally wouldn’t wear those together, I would wear sandals. But I like the combination and agree with you that the colours are great together. Check Bijou’s posts- she wears summer dresses and boots together very successfully.

I get the sense you're not big into sneakers-as-fashion (could be wrong -- but I remember you striking a cute pair of Vans off your "maybe" list a while back? See inspo photo ), but that's a dress I'd wear with sneakers, for sure. Sandals would work too, of course: slides, flip flops, Birks, what have you.

LaPed, I haven’t been back on my skateboard since I took most of the skin off my right knee, sometime in middle or high school! But yes, I know what Vans are, had a dress from them that turned out to be more of a tunic, and I’ve been on & off about the shoes for a while now. Nemosmom wrote me a great guide to them, so now I know which ones to get, if I do get some. I’m generally not into the whole dress & sneaks thing. Part of that is because of my bad experiences with fashion sneakers (which is why Vans) but I’m also not sure it’s a look for me, as much as I like to be ready to rumble. Idk why that is.

Cat2, I currently have no sandals. Had these on a tray outside my door, as Germans sometimes do, and someone picked them off. But they wouldn’t have worked with this dress anyway. I plan to buy at least 1 pr while we are in Florida.

Great dress! I personally think that the booties look a little heavy to wear with it. When I wear booties with a dress, I make sure that the booties have a bit higher shaft that fits close to the ankle and lower calf. I think it is really hard to wear low-shaft booties with a dress and have it look good.

I would probably also pair the dress with lower-contrast footwear to do some bookending with your hair.

I would probably add a dainty necklace with the dress, but that is just my preference. I don't think it's necessary.

I think some styles of boots are more commonly seen with sundresses so we’ve adjusted to it. I can picture these boots with a maxi dress, and I can picture this short dress with cowboy boots. It’s something about the amount of leg showing and how exactly the boots and dress proportions hit on your body. I agree with others that you will likely want sandals, thought! Boots with a dress seems more of a festival look, while to my mind Florida just screams beachy and resort.

Thanks Gillian. If I find my cowboy boots in the storage locker, I might try them with the dress. Though as you and others have said, it’s going to be stinkin’ hot, so I might not even want to wear anything but sandals.

Yes, when I think of wearing boots with a dress it’s usually partly necessity like when going somewhere muddy. If you don’t have to worry about that, may as well beat the heat in sandals!

Dress is adorable, FI, and looks great on you. The boots are too heavy for it. Wait to pick up some cute sandals in Florida to go with it—you should be awash in sandal options down there.

Gillian, from my Austin days, I’m familiar with cowboy boots & bare legs/shorts, with no mud anywhere in sight. But when we lived near Amarillo, people got their ropers and other boots muddy working—but you couldn’t see their knees.
