On the lookout for brown - YouLookFab Forum

After Ele started that great Forum thread about brown a few weeks ago, I realized that a lot of the brown mainstays of my closet have worn out beyond acceptability. I recently tossed a pair of brown pinstriped dress trousers from ATL that were a workhorse in my wardrobe for almost 5 years, and I'm also on the verge of tossing two favorite pairs of brown loafer pumps and brown mary janes. This will leave some serious gaps in my wardrobe, as I have come to rely on these items to pair with a camel business jacket and a brown herringbone blazer for important meetings.

Unfortunately, brown doesn't seem to be a part of the fall collections this year at all, and I only see blacks, grays and plums out there. Although I love blacks, grays and plums, I am all set on those and, as a warm colors gal, need to replenish my browns. Has anyone seen any decent brown business-appropriate items in their fall shopping forays, and if so, could you please direct me to those retailers? Thanks so much!

Bronze is a more interesting brown alternative for shoes, and I always like brown-based outfits with red. yellow or teal shoes.

There are also a lot of brown shoes on zappos - and the free shipping and returns are a big plus!

From what I can see online, Nordstrom has a decent selection of brown women's pants right now.

Yep, I think LOFT actually has brown solid and pinstripe pants galore right now...As Angie say's.... hang on we are bound to see oodles of brown, given all the earth tones out there.

Great post, Tanya. I must have the tan jaguar flats! Angie, I've seen a LOT of dark, chocolate brown, which is my favorite shade of brown.

Tanya, you're such a sweetheart to go scouring the Internet to find brown dress pants and shoes for me! I wish I could enlist you as my personal shopper, but I understand you have a burgeoning career as a scientist that may otherwise occupy you. I never thought to look on Zappos for pants. I did search there for brown shoes, but didn't quite find what I was looking for. I have had those Me Too Sedonas bookmarked on my Amazon wish list for the past year, but I liked the Salems from 2008 better (though heartbreakingly, I missed out on those). The Me Too Lottos also look especially promising.

I can see that the trousers may be more of a challenge though. I'm looking for a chocolate brown, perhaps with pinstripes, and did I mention that I wear a size 0 petite? And ideally, I would really like to keep the price tag below $100.

Kate, I will have to peruse Nordstrom's site again. Tarzy, that BF cardigan is gorgeous--so tempting, as I have not yet acquired one. Taylor, I just visited both the AT and LOFT websites again and am seeing more promising options. I will definitely have to visit LOFT now and try on those herringbone and glen plaid trousers in person. I meant to do it this weekend, but wound up ordering those Born riding boots instead, which means I'll need to take it easy on the wallet for the next week or two.

Angie, I saw your other Forum post on earth tones being back--I can only hope! I will try to be patient and wait a few weeks. I had assumed that most of the fall collections had already been rolled out by now, but perhaps better things are to come if the LOFT selection is any indication.

I'm also feeling brown for fall, Frances. For someone who likes the colour as much as I do, I have very little in my wardrobe- a pencil skirt, a voluminous trench, a v-neck sweater and several shoes. I'm on the hunt for some brown boots, a dress and a cozy cardi this year.

Agree with what Angie and some others said- wait a few weeks and start to hunt again once we're into "Autumn proper" (hmm, that was very British of me...). I think earth tones always tend to come around a little later in the season.

Ele, I do hope you're right. If the Born boots fit and look good, I will at least be able to check that item off my list for a few years. It's funny--I didn't realize how heavily I rely on brown as a neutral until some of my brown wardrobe workhorses had to be put out to pasture!
