TG, I hear you!! I am primarily a consignment and thrift shopper, but recently I have purchased some items from BR and have been very impressed with the quality and styles offered.

That’s terrible! Like TG, the bulk of my everyday wear is Gap or BR. I shop there more than Nordstrom! I’ve noticed they have been having a lot of sales lately on new merchandise but had no idea things were so desperate. It’s shocking!

It’s really sad. I hope they can make it. I shop at all of their brands. I love Athleta in particular - all my gear and swim, but love Banana, too. The article wasn’t clear if the rent was unpaid at just Gap stores or all the brands, but I’m sure it affects survival for all of them. It will be scary to see what happens to already struggling malls.

I live Old Navy for inexpensive summer dresses and t-shirts! A good portion of my summer wardrobe is from them!
I work in a job where my clothes take a beating, and I just cannot spend too much on certain pieces. Old Navy and Gap are great for that.

The implications of this just pandemic go on and on, don't they?

I am not a business or economics person and I am fascinated and surprised that these huge corporations can be so quickly brought to the brink. My concern is more for the people at the bottom of the supply chain, but this will impact people at every level. I hope things turn around or better re-invent somehow.

The longer this drags on, the less people are going to be buying. Lots of people bought WFH stuff, cozy stuff, and etcetera but now they have what they need for those types of items. With nowhere to go, there is no need for anything dressy or fancy, so no need to shop.

It has accelerated the retail apocalypse in a really scary way. Lots of major players are on bankruptcy watch lists or have already announced they are filing. Truly game changing stuff happening right now

It’s estimated that in the US apparel sales have dropped 50% vs Last year since the start of the stay at home orders. Very few business can with stand that kind of change of fortune overnight, and it is very unclear how long will last. On top of that many many retailers were already in weaken positions as they are adapting to online vs B&M as well as changing tastes, and the continued casualization of work and worship. The Gap, Macy’s, JC Penny’s, were already on many people’s watch list before this.

The longer it lasts the worse it will get. Even before the virus I read about all the "cheap" stuff from China and other countries. We all have too much stuff, including clothing. So this along with the work from home, no social functions, etc. except for the very casual items, everything else is either sitting in the closet, or in donate piles. Stands to reason there will be no reason to purchase more. I just read that things like dog grooming are doubling in price. My local nursery is doing curb side, but prices are higher. Things are going to be very different, and fashion will be on the bottom of priorities for a lot of people.

Gap brands going under would be pretty devastating for my wardrobe- I shop all of the brands regularly, not just for me but also for my husband and sons (Gap, BR, and ON)

As kkards pointed out, GAP Inc has been on the retail watchlist for a good year. They are overinvested in real estate - in mall locations which are quickly falling out of favour with the consumer. I can't see them going out of business altogether - just closing a lot of b&m stores. Right now, they are a mess of huge discounts and super slow shipping (which isn't their fault but does nothing to help turn over merchandise quickly ) .
