On fashion by the decade

I'm 36 so I was a baby in the late 70's, a kid in the 80's and a teen and young adult in the 90's. Thinking back, I can clearly identify 80's fashion and 90's fashion (particularly the grunge era which I loved)

I am also enjoying the 80's revival - there are things about the 80's that I was too young to enjoy back then that I can enjoy now,

This got me thinking... how we would distinguish naughties fashion... And the decade we are in now (can't think what to call it!?) ?

What are the things we will look back on in 20 years as early millennium fashion?

I was a teenager in the early 00s, and I recall* the following:

-low-slung flares
-asymetrical scarf hem tops and skirts
-sweatpants with words on the bum
-short, snug tops that show a sliver of midrif
-cargo pants
-skirts over pants
-shrugs
-ponchos
-spaghetti strap tank tops
-Adidas tearaway pants
-Chunky Platform shoes, like those big black foam wedges
-Flip Flops with giant flowers on the thong part
-Skateboard Shoes - Adidas Superstars, Etnies

I will have to read and learn from y'all. The aughts, and frankly the '90s too - I draw big blank on. I have some vague memories of unexciting palazzo pants and little prairie florals on black backgrounds. That's about it. The rise and fall of the woman's suit.

Good point Emily... You have reminded me of a couple of outfits. I knew someone who wore such low slung jeans that her appendix scar showed and her bikini line needed to be adjusted (if you know what I mean)

I'm like Rachylou...I just draw a big blank. I can't remember any fashion from the 90s or 00s. Even Emily's run-down means nothing to me. In the 90s, I was in college, and college style seems to be the same everywhere: t-shirts and jeans. In the 00s, I was working in a very small workplace with people who didn't really care much with keeping up with trends. So I guess I was in a fashion black hole for twenty years. But from what I hear, maybe it was a good time to be in a fashion black hole.

I was in school in the 90's but I'll give it a go still as I was very much into fashion then as well. It could be that some trends listed below were in vouge only in India, (and could very well be 80's filtering in too late!):
1. Branded clothes: Tees & accessories that displayed brand names & logos very prominently. India had opened its markets in the 90s and saw a lot of influx of global brands. I guess this could be the reason for everyone wanting to show-off their foreign goods.
2. Overalls Midi dresses. One would have to wear a top underneath.
3. Palazzo pants. We used to call them parallels locally. They used to be a two piece set consisting of a loose top. God, the volume on volume was just too much!
4. Maxi skirts in umbrella cuts. Basically voluminous skirts.
5. BF plaid shirts with leggings
6. Black ribbon neckbands that look a lot like embellished dog collars
7. Tight crop tops, coz the jeans were very high waisted & of a BF kind of fit.
8. Sneakers. Chunky ones.

Loved the grunge era. Hope the 2003 (?) velour track suits never come back. I do, however, have fond memories of my puffy big etnies with big skater type jeans.

Hmm. I was in college in the early 00s. I remember puffer vests, pea coats, floral blouses, velvet scrunchies, bootcuts, baby doll style tops, zip off cargo pants. My own (non) style was prairie muffinish and involved denim jumpers and flannel shirt dresses.

OK, I'll give this a shot based on what I saw looking out over a sea of college students in the first decade of the millennium:

Low slung jeans with frequent "whale tail" sightings
Midriff-baring baby T's
Crocs--often in neon colors
Uggs--usually dirty and saggy
Pants rolled to the tops of high-top Chucks--usually worn with laces dangling
Juicy Couture velour sweatsuits--often with words on the butt
Hoodies--worn up, usually oversized and in black
Frosted Hair
Whiskered, "dirty" denim
Trucker hats
Baggy skater shorts worn with an even baggier T and Vans
Imitation Olsen Twins' boho/hippie/waif layered looks
Knock-off designer "It" bags loaded with hardwear, straps, buckles, and logos
Scrunchies
