Oh Hair, Oh My!

Getting a haircut tomorrow at noon tomorrow, provided the weather cooperates. I had a great long bob last spring, but I found I could only wear it one, perfectly blow-dried way, and I want to be able to straighten it to sleek, or allow my natural waves to work for me. That versatility gives me the variety I crave.

I'm using Pinterest photos, but I so wish I could find images that aren't of celebrities. I will never look like Katherine McPhee! (more Nanny McPhee).

I'd appreciate feedback, particularly from those who've noted my style "journey." I'm thinking of more sideswept to the bang -- not heavy on the forehead.

I HATE that about hair cut pics. These people have all been styled for hours. We have no idea what it really looks like. YUCK !

With that off my chest, hahaaa, I LOVE 3, but with shorter bangs. I tried the side swept thing and it was a pain. 6 looks similar, and I like it too. Both those cuts looks as if they would look great with a wave or a curl. Good luck !!

I love 5. There are some major differences with the bangs in these cuts - are you looking for more or less bang definition? I have zero experience with bangs other than kindergarten horror, but I do like the look of them!

I really like 3 and 5. I agree that super styled hair photos are little help!

Thanks for weighing in. Hair gets harder and harder. I spent my early 20s with signature waist length hair. That was easy! That's OVER! I'm a little scared, but, truthfully, my hair grows so fast that #3 will grow into #5 in a couple months time!

I have heavy hair and a lowish forehead, so I think I need to beware of heavy forehead coverage. Wispy or sideswept is probably a safer bet and echoes a lot of the fashion inspiration I've had recently -- old Hollywood. I think a bit of texturizing will keep the look modern, not retro and, um, middle-aged.

I think your hair definitely contributes to the old Hollywood look -- its thickness, slight wave, and shine are perfect for what you have in mind.

Do you like and trust your stylist? If so, I think sharing your thoughts along with these pictures and maybe also some of the fashion pics from your Pinterest board will help the person get the right idea and steer you in the right direction.

Suz: Last spring I discovered that my stylist does her best work with photos to follow. My hair grows quickly, so I'm not so concerned about "too short," but bangs and layering can be tricky, as we all know! My hair can look "heavy" and drag me down a bit. This must be remedied!

If hair is the biggest worry in my day tomorrow, it will be a very good day, regardless of the hairdo!

I like 2/3 as well as 5, but would actually avoid 1 and 5 for your hair texture and your own style --- could end up too heavy/flat and severe cut straight across like that.

Beth Ann, I always thought bang and layers are the best cut for shoulder length thick hair. Why do you think it can be tricky?

Beth Ann, I have a terrible time seeing the differences in hairstyles, so these links may be way off base relative to what you are looking for. I was admiring this HGTV host's hair just the other day. Sorry I'm on my ipad and can't post the pictures.

I really like 3 for you, maybe with lighter, slightly shorter bangs. If you're like me, as you say you are, those bangs will very quickly grow into the length in the picture. My hair and nails grow so fast, it's annoying!

Thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback --- working from pictures can be tricky, but I think it really helps my stylist.

Mona: I find that bangs can be tricky. Sometimes they end of too heavy and dropping across my eyes, and sometimes they're not integrated well into the cut, which ruins any elegance whatsoever! You're right, though, layers and shaping are crucial for heavy hair. You know this as well as I do, with your luxurious tresses!

Mandipa --- I love the texture in the layering in the first and last photos, but I will tell her that I don't want that much bang across my face.

PIL -- LOL! I watch this show, and I'm always amazed by how good her hair looks! I like the fact that we see it grow out between cuts! Thanks for the link!

Right on. These are the two problems I have had in the past with my hair cut too. Bangs either too heavy or not integrated well into the cut. #3 and 5 are very similar cuts. It depends a lot on how you style your hair too. Do you apply products and blow dry everyday?

Mona: I'm looking for the freedom to do both wavy airdry, or blow-dried sleek. I use a mousse when I'm curly, and heat-protector and a little moroccan oil with the straight look. I realize that this is the "holy grail" of haircuts. Wish me luck!

I love your hair--so much body. I wish my hair had more volume like yours but am not willing to spend any time styling it! I like #2, #3 and #5 for you but agree it's so hard to tell from these super-styled pics.
