NYDJ: Hopelessly uncool? (Please say no.)

I know that NYDJ is not one of the hipper brands on the planet (after all, they are by definition "mom jeans", right? or at least, "jeans for moms") but I'm tired of fighting the fact that they fit me really well.

Every now and then I try a style that's bizarrely huge, even in the smallest size, but for the most part they just fit.

Fight for a higher cool factor, or give into fit?

I hope not because one of my most worn items is a pair (actually two since I duplicated) of black ponte pants. They are high waisted which is comfortable to me, I just can't tuck with them. But they are great for sweaters, jackets etc. They have been among Angie's picks before and I know some other forum members have them. They do run big; the pair I have are down two sizes from my regular.

@rabbit -- I don't think the *fit* is uncool, because it fits, which is definitely cooler than something that doesn't fit. I'm more wondering about the brand.

I think Costco (or Target or any other modest-price-point brand) would have a kind of reverse-snobbery, downtown cool factor right out of the gate, whereas something like NYDJ is positioning itself as "[sort of] premium denim -- only for moms!" and it brings out my internal mean girl.

I'm going to wear what fits best regardless of the brand, I'd just like to know when I'm entering territory that everyone but me knew was going to diminish my already-questionable cool factor.

So be honest. I can take it. I know I said "please say no" but that's because I'm hoping for an honest no and not because I want to be falsely reassured.

If they fit, wear them. They com in so many leg styles and colors now. They are too long in the rise for me.

What's wrong with that? I own more pairs of NYDJs than the stores.
In my book it's cool to be uncool and I am OK with that.
Most NYDJs have a great fit. Some of the newer styles are not as good as one might have come to expect from them.
Enjoy your NYDJs and don't even worry about them.

If they fit, wear them. Who cares the brand?

Brand isn't the cool factor, how they fit you is. But, you know, I am a confessed wearer of Talbots and Ralph Lauren jeans.

April, I dress MANY clients in NYDJ's. Their fits are incomparably good for some body types. Plus, the brand uses great fabrications and modern style detailing - like tuxedo pants and embossed patterns.

April - I know that Angie has recommended NYDJ many, many times!! She would not do that if she thought they were "uncool!!" The bottom line (sorry pun intended) is that jeans are very hard to fit. There are so many area that need to be just right. If this brand fits you and feels great, you'd be crazy to wear anything else!! Ill fitting premium jeans ain't got nothin' on jeans that make your legs look a mile long and feel great!! I hope Angie will chime in to reassure you, but honestly you should wear what you like that looks good. PS I wear Lucky brand jeans. The lola skinnies and the classic riders fit me perfectly. No reason to mess with something that's working. Just more to spend on other things!! Hope that helps!

NYDJs are horribly uncool on me - they just don't "get" my body - the rise is all wrong, the waist, the leg widths, etc. However, I say that if they fit you - go for it! No need to worry about the coolness factor!

It's the fit, and then lesser is the style factor (as in, there could be jeans that fit perfectly in terms of measurements, but "the fit", meaning, fluid, body-con, leg style, or whatever, are considered dated) . And there can be different fits for different tops as noted. So just use the home-mirror test and test run with the target tops and footwear.
If someone had never tried on anything but one brand of jeans (er, looking at me--I cannot claim large tryage, but I'm expanding), then it'd be important to keep trying new things, and still is, as jean styles ebb and flow, and bodies change, but I would never use the label itself as the limiting factor.

I'm some type of hourglass/pear hybrid, and NYDJ seem to fit me pretty well without gaping at the waist. Moreover, they are cut generously in the legs which is my big fit issue. They are also have quite a high rise which I find comfortable, but I'm starting to think that a lower (mid-rise) is more flattering or at least more modern looking.

NYDJ also hugely inflates their sizes, so I have to go down two sizes although I wear my jeans fairly loose. If a woman is slight, she is likely sized out. I wear a 0/P0 in this brand, but a P4 in Jag or the Macy's in-house brand and P26 in Big Star.

I second what has been said so far. Nothing is LESS cool than jeans that don't fit properly or people who insist on wearing a certain name with no regard to fit. NYDJ really do fit some body types particularly well, although that may vary with different NYDJ styles, too (different styles fitting different body types). I like that they tend to be a little bit higher waisted than many other brands.

Ultimately, the vast majority of people will never see or even think to look at the label on your jeans; they will only notice if they fit and look nice. Like Angie says, leave no retail stone unturned in the pursuit of what truly fits and flatters.

If they make you feel fabulous, wear them. I don't think they are Mom jeans. They are for women who are not teens anymore and want their rise just a bit higher. My most fitted jeans are NYDJs and I wore out a pair of their ponte knit pants last year.

To chime back in again, I love the quality of NYDJ jeans and have tried many pairs, but have never bought any. They simply don't fit me... too high in the rise, or whatever. I'm also frustrated by the variation in sizing.

Chico's jeans, however, fit me perfectly. I've been wearing them for over 10 years. To be honest, I don't really like Chico's clothing, but their jeans seem to have been designed to fit my very imperfect body perfectly. Over the past few months, I've been trying to find a pair of premium denim jeans that I would like better than Chico's. I've tried many different brands, but no luck so far. Right now I'm wearing a pair of Chico's boyfriend jeans that I absolutely love... and that seems to have been discontinued. Fortunately I bought two pairs.

April, if they fit well and are comfortable, then wear them with pride!

My two best fitting pair of jeans are NYDJ and Talbot's (Heritage fit). Both are bootcuts, have a great backside fit, and lengthen my legline.

I have many NYDJs. I love the fit, and they make my short stumpy legs look less so! The best part is their stretch lets me move and bend over comfortably (without showing any parts of my rear) as I work with special needs kids and they move a lot! They have held up really well, I am very grateful to YLF for recommending these amazing jeans!
