NYC Travel capsule 5 - buy shoes ETA: NO NEW SHOES :-)

I'm not fully covered with water good walking shoes that are water resistant, so I'm thinking of buying a pair of New Balance sneakers before leaving. I don't want depend on that I *have to* hunt down shoes if I need it. Should I buy the sneakers or not? Black/grey or light beige/yellow?

I would keep looking for a pair of comfortable shoes. Sneaks are not going to fly in NYC. How about a pair of cons, topsiders, or clark's?

Well, cons are soo flat, but I could always have some insoles. But they arn't water repellent.

Topsiders - not on me, reminds me too much of 1980's
Clarks - I could consider that, but they are too expensive for my budget now

What I really would like are these snake sneakers (totally in love with them! super comfy!!!) and biker boots, but they are waaay out of my budget

I had several oxfords several years ago, so I'm kind of hesitating on them. I know they are really popular and looks great on others, but I just don't *feel* them. Thank you so much for coming up with all the great solutions! Sorry for not being very enthusiastic

Agree with Rita - sneakers will make you stick out like a tourist in NYC. I have the Born oxfords that she linked and they are very comfy and walkable. If you spray them, they will be reasonably waterproof unless you step in a big puddle or something. My preference would actually be for something like the biker boots in your photo or combat boots like Docs.

Can you do boat shoes, like rockport? I see that Eurosko has some nice types that save my feet on long walking days. They usually have a small heel...

If oxfords aren't your style and those boots you pictured are out of your range, how about something similar in feel to the boots but much more budget friendly? You can spray any shoes to make them more water-resistant if necessary. Payless has these short boots on clearance on their website for $20:

This was more difficult than I first thought. I don't want to rush into buying shoes I don't love. Then I'd rather stick to the ones I have and see if something comes up along my way.

Good point about spraying any shoe!! That means that cons probably would be a little bit water repellent, right? If so, I think I'll keep my blue jean shoe. They are not cons, but a cheap substitute.

The shoes at Eurosko is nice, Jayne and looks very comfy, but I'm hesitating for an uncertain reason.
ETA: I've been thinking about why I hesitate on the boat shoes. I think I feel a lack of RATE in them

Harmonica, I agree that rushing to buy shoes just for your trip is unwise. Something you already have will do, and you will have the advantage of them being broken in. I know you are probably freaking out about choosing the perfect things to pack, but whatever you take, it will work out okay. You probably won't *have* to buy a pair of shoes in NYC, but you might find something there that you really love, and that will be better than settling for a sneaker now that you would only wear on the trip. Now I'll continue with my presentation without travel capsule details popping up all the time. *need magic to stay focused on work!*

And to the rest of you: thank you so much for great suggestions and comments! It's all because of your replies that I have been able to figure out a shoe solution and not blowing money out the window: NO NEW SHOES before leaving. Now I'll leave the shoe case to rest

I will not be hunting for shoes in NYC, but if i by accident stumble over some great shoes, I'll keep you updated

When my family and I were caught in a downpour, my Dansko Pros kept me high and dry. Any leather platform shoe or clog with a non-skid sole would probably work. Not that they would be NY sophisticated, but they aren't gear.

Well, I bought trip shoes in a MAD rush, having them overnighted to me before leaving for Italy, and I loooved them. But those were heavily road tested by Suz and the forum. I agree that jumping into an unknown like this may not be the best bet. I used Kiwi heavy duty waterproofing spray on my cotton anorak with good results - not like a slicker or anything, but very decent. You could see where the rain droplets fell, but they didn't soak through and get ME wet.

Smart choice - save your $$$ for NYC fun and wear the shoes that are already broken in.

Thank you all for responding and giving such great advice! I couldn't have done this all by myself and being so sure about my choises. YLF are the best

I'll be spraying my shoes and trench to keep me as dry as possible in case of rain.

I checked the weather forcast and it says rain during the day on wednesday. I'll be indoors working that day and most of the shopping will be done by that time so, I'll stay optimistic and maybe some nice shoes will cross my way. No stressful hunting
