November wedding!?

Hi everyone,

I’m after a bit of advice, I have a friends wedding in early November and I’m already freaking out about what to wear.. so many times I make the mistake of overdressing and ending up feeling insecure all day/night - I don’t want this again!
I have already bought and sent back a few dresses but may have found something I like. It’s a bright red floral long sleeved wrap dress but now I’m worrying about what to wear with it? It’s November so it will definitely be chilly here.. I thought about wearing some black tights, black heels and my leather jacket? Im just really worried that I’ll look too ‘casual’... what do you guys think?

Hi Julybug! That’s a cute name.
I started here by asking for help packing /prepping for a wedding. People were wonderfully helpful and my son and I had everything we needed—and I didn’t shell out for all new stuff either.

Where will the wedding be held? Can you post a link to the dress? Are there other events besides ceremony/celebration you’ll be going to?

Do you have any info on the style of wedding? Church? Bride’s gown? A long wool coat *would* be more classic, but a dress and heels sounds just right and would carry the leather jacket. If it’s really cold, you could always wear thermals under and double nylons.

I like the sound of your outfit. I'd definitely ask for clues about the dressiness of the event, location, etc. And if given a vague term, ask for more specifics. Or ask for what most people will be wearing. That way you won't hit either end of the spectrum.

And, FWIW, I think there is always a range at a wedding.

Weddings, always a conundrum, even if the bride stipulates a dress code like 'Casual'. What does 'casual' mean? Well, not jeans and tee's obviously but I've been to so many weddings where a dress code is given and I see all styles! Unless an outfit is way over the top and the guest looks like the bride, it all works and no one seems to notice. What matters is cohesion I think. Whatever you wear looks classy, well put together. And you feel great in your outfit and comfortable!

My granddaughter's wedding is in October. Dress is 'casual.' I'm a Reader in the Catholic Blessing the night before the civil ceremony on Saturday for which I'm a Reader; my husband singing the couple's fave John Legend, All of Me on Saturday. For the Blessing: I am wearing a purple midi skirt with black top and black heels, silver jewelry. For the civil ceremony with a generous guest list coming and dinner/dance reception following: I am wearing the Maggy London dress (the NAS dress Angie posted as a top pick). It must be fitted well and that required reordering a smaller size for me. The Eileen Fisher Hutton's in cream/beige color (had to reorder smaller size there too). Silver earrings and cuff bracelet.
All items I can easily wear again for other occasions so definitely not one occasion outfits.

Re your outfit with red dress, etc. Forgot to say--not sure about the black leather jacket. Would help to see the red dress posted if possible. I have the quandry--what to wear for a jacket since it is cooler temps. Right now, I'm leaning toward not wearing one and having a jacket in the car if I feel I need one to stay warm or a wrap scarf/shawl. The dress you are wearing may stand alone. The black heels/accessories might be enough black without the jacket but I would need to see the dress first. I asked my daughter if black tights or patterned hose would be good with the purple midi skirt and she said a blunt, no! what? I'm going to play with it and see for myself. She says plain hose or no hose at all. In October?

So, I managed to pick up a camel coloured long wool coat - absolute bargain too. Thinking this will look much smarter as Rachylou mentioned.

I have a picture of the dress but don’t know how to upload!?

I would normally wear the dress without tights but I’m just worried about it being cold and windy, I don’t want to be forever holding down my dress to cover my behind! Although I guess with the long coat I wouldn’t need too?

Hmm.. why do we stress ourselves over these things?

Can you share more about the location, or the level of dressiness of the venue? (Church/reception hall? Hotel ballroom?)

I agree weddings can be challenging, but I always see a range of dress codes, so I think better to go with what will make you feel comfortable and appropriately dressed vs worrying about being overly dressed.

From your description, I think the wrap sounds wonderful. I wonder about the leather jacket - are you wearing it for warmth or to dress down the dress? Will you wear it throughout the event, or will you leave it at coat check? You might consider a wrap instead if you need warmth?

I wouldn’t say it was an overally ‘classy’ wedding, it’s not at a church just at a local wedding venue. And no attire has been stipulated, I think people just expect you to dress up and looks ‘nice’

I’m hoping to ditch the leather jacket idea now that I have the long coat I bought today, I’m hoping this will look ok with the dress. I don’t plan on wearing a coat unless I’m outside so hopefully this won’t be too often as it is indoors! lol but I just didn’t something that would look ok if I needed one.. I did not want to have to run to car and grab my mountain equipment dog walking jacket!! Haha!

I may get away without wearing tights, if I don’t think they look right then I won’t, as I know have the bigger coat they may not be necessary.

Anybody know how to upload a photo? I’m using my phone and can’t see anything clues!?!

The last November wedding I was at was a Thanksgiving wedding in Nebraska. It was hot that day and no one wore a coat. Be ready for anything. As long as you feel lovely, you can probably style the dress any way you want. Do not let being the most dressed up bother you. It is a wedding. It will honor the couple.

Dress and heels sounds exactly right for a wedding. Add a smart-ish coat or jacket for the weather and I think you're all set. So it's just whether this particular dress, heels and coat play nicely and which if any accessories you would like.

Have you considered nude shoes and stockings? Black and red together can be tricky, because they are both such strong colors. Nude would go well with you camel coat too.
