Not my style, style filters, What?!?

I'm confused, Quoting Angie here:

There is lots of people on this forumwho can only see outfits through their own style prefrences and filters. I really get that! It is hard for people to see things through someone else's style filter. I have been doing this for 20 years, it's my line of work, AND I get lots of practice. That's why it's easier for me to see a personal style through many filters.

I strongly disagree with you Angie, in my defence I will say that we all have eyes and judge outfits people wear everyday, if we want to or not, it's just natural.
Just like you may not be hairstylist, but you have a idea which hairstyle looks somewhat off on someone, Right?
Also gonna add that MaryK can pull of bright colors like yourself, but Sveta's earthy coloring is more like greenglove's, and you would not put Jean in anything bright, would you?
What this forum be without anybody saying Nay and just Yay ALL THE TIME?

I think There are people on this forum who only like ~ what they would wear~ and don't really see things the way you, I or Angie and others do.
It takes time and a lot of work to appreciate all styles .
Some folks are put off by tattoos and piercings and don't like it so they don't ~get~ the art of it...but I have worked around that most of my career. I get the~ Arty~ aesthetic tatts bring to a stylist.
I agree with Angie's statement, the trick here is not to judge what people wear if we don't like it , but learn to appreciate the difference in styles:)

Hmm, I have to say Angie knows what she's talking about. That doesn't mean we don't all have valuable opinions, it just means it's not as easy for us to put our own biases aside. We can still work at it, and improve at it, but knowing our filters are there makes it easier to address them.

Angie is exceptional in having both a talent for, and loads of experience in, accepting the style filters of many different people.

ETA someone in Taylor's field would have the same experience of working with different styles every day. Obviously some people here have that, but I'd assume most don't and are learning to develop that skill and sensibility.

I would also add there's been a number of times lots of posters say "nay" to something and then Angie comes in with a resounding "yay" (or vice versa when she is a "spanner" :))

I think in that case Angie is seeing a bigger picture beyond those individual style filters.

Misia, I think you misunderstood.

The point is *precisely* what you stated in the latter part of your thread. As Taylor put it - it's hard to like something on someone else when you wouldn't personally wear those items. That is my point. They judge someone's style through their own style filter only - not that person's style filter. Fruitful puts it well too: "it's not as easy for us to put our own biases aside".

Where would I be in my line of work if I only ever judged an outfit through my own style filter - based on what I personally would wear. I would be nowhere and a very unsuccessful fashion stylist.

You are always free to respectfully disagree, Misia. I certainly respectfully disagree when I need to. Hope this clarified your confusion.

I think it is very natural to have these "filters" for most people especially if they do not work in the creative or style related field. I certainly have them. However after being on this forum for 1.5 years I think my "filters" definitely thinned out a bit under a great Angie's influence but they are still there...
I also think it is perfectly alright to say Nay and this is how we all learn here. If all of us see things the same way life would be too boring!
Renata, I hope I did not offend you in my thread because I really appreciate your comments. Remember: I did return that neon green jacket even though Angie gave it thumbs up!

Tattoos are a perfect example.

Most people have strong reactions to them. Either they like them or they don't. If someone dislikes tattoos, thinks they are ugly and would never ever get one, it is is more difficult for them to be objective about whether an individual tattoo is a well executed piece of work, placed well on the body to the right scale for the individual. Their bias would interfere. This is certainly not the case for ALL people, but many. It's normal!

People have to work at having an objective eye in any venue where emotions and opinions come into play. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but failing to recognize it is true puts you at a disadvantage.
