Not liking what I am seeing

I just browsed through midi dresses and I don’t really like what I am seeing so far. So many shapeless dresses, ugly floral prints and wrap styles with very low necklines. High slits also very popular. Maybe it is still too early in the season. Have you seen some spring dresses that you like?

Anchie, the "grandma's furniture" type floral prints seem prevalent this year in what I've seen so far. I'm not a big fan either. I have my eye on this one from Boden but that's about it.

Haha, I was literally just looking at spring/summer skirts and dresses online and feeling a resounding “meh” at most of what I saw. Maybe it’s too early? I’ve been wearing certain favorites to death and thought I’d start planning ahead, but it’s not looking good for me so far. Too many pleats, no prints that appeal to me, and lots of colors that don’t go with my wardrobe or that I don’t like (looking at you, muddy pink and mustard, ugh).

I'm liking these from Uniqlo IDLF collaboration. They aren't available. Due to 'drop' end of the month. I like the first one in the red print, and the second one in white. (I'm showing it in 'muddy pink' because the white one was hard to see against the white background.)

I am happy about the wrap dresses, and figure they can be stitched shut at the top for modesty. But theres definitely a print overload. And the bell sleeves, which I do like, but can be difficult to layer over-so go mostly unworn all winter Lesson learned.
For summer, theres a Boden dress in conker I'm considering, though hoping it goes to Nordies.

Wrap dresses don't work well for me, and as much as I like pattern, I'm picky about it. But my first assignment this summer is to shop my closet and see what's in there that works here.

I've noticed the return of wrap dresses and tops, and that's something I'll sit out. I'm pretty sure this time of year is typically not great for skirts/dresses, as it's either winter leftovers or "Resort" and "Spring Break" collections, which tend toward flimsy materials and revealing cuts.

I like wrap styles, and in theory they can work well for my body type, but fit is difficult, and I’ve seen too many flimsy, too-low-cut iterations lately. Or again the prints or fabrics are not to my liking. Feeling really picky lately!

More complaining from me, because Rachylou's mauve post is too far back. I'm seeing pink, which would be fine, except a lot of it is between bubble gum and Barbie. Not fine with me. I'm OK with pops of magenta and fuchsia, and with blush, pale pink and I think with Millennial Pink (although I'm not really sure what that is), but not this stuff.

I am also sitting out wrap dresses as I can t fill them out. I don't really need any new dresses if I wear jackets with what I have. I have pasted on almost all my pencil skirts and intend to look for some new skirts. So far nothing has tempted me. I hope it is just too early.

We are going into Autumn/Winter here but I like what I see so far. Veronika Maine, my favourite Australian retailer, has just launched its A/W 19 collection. I love all the dresses and skirts. I even like the western vibe. Never say never, ha ha! And I’m glad to see the return of lace up, heeled ankle boots (definitely on my list for this year).

Anchie and others, it's only Feburary. Give it time. There will be fabulous dresses and skirts. I'm positive about it

V-necks are on the rise though - and I thought that would make many of you happy....

Christina, the front pleats on that gorgeous Boden dress lie funny and stick out - which is why I sent it back and it's not a top pick.

I pretty much always see something I like, every season? And my market is way smaller than that of the US or even Canada or Australia. So I don't really understand why you all can't find things. Maybe you are looking too early? Our lovely summer weather feels a bit autumnal today- but I have a new dress waiting from December that I got at an outlet store for $20. I would not look in stores much until it IS autumn, which is several weeks away yet.

I’m excited about what I’m seeing this spring so far as far as lengths. Finally some coverage in dresses. Floral prints, which I like. A wrap style isn’t usually my favorite, but I have added one. The puff sleeves and extra ruffle sleeves don’t work for me though. I’m thinking I will be able to find some of what I’m looking for this season in skirts.

I'm liking the coverage and the relaxation of the body con silhouette that has been so predominant for the past, say ten years or so.

Agree with early comments about the prints. I know that right now "more is more" but I don't want to drown in a loudly-colored floral print.

And glad to hear I am not the only one who feels this way about this grandma furniture prints and deep v-necks.
After more searching I found this over the top dress that I am strangely attracted to. Maybe all this dark winter neutrals are getting to me. Please talk me out of it.

I found this dress on deep discount at The Gap. I was a little skeptical because of the "grandma's furniture" print and it doesn't really look that great on the model. But for $16 I figured I would try it. It is surprisingly cute on. I switched out the belt with a wide leather belt which helps give better waist definition and a focal point amongst all the print. Sometimes a wild card just works.

Suntiger, yes, pepto-bismal. Straight up harshness, nothing to add interest. Otoh, this top, which is a far brighter pink than I expect myself to like, stopped me in my tracks the other night. Not crazy about the shape, but I am crazy about the color--it's gorgeous in person.

Molly, I think that dress's print is too small scale and bright to read as "grandma's furniture." At least not in my eyes, and I made that comment. Not all floral skew that way, IMO.

I also look for a nice midi dress with structured fluidity like Angie describes it - some structure around the waist, possibly with sleeves (if yes, definitely have to be fitted, not puffed, wide or flutter) and A line shape not too wide. Not black or black based pattern - I can't wear black patterns is spring and summer.
Mango has some not bad options although most of their dresses are too shapeless for my taste. Their quality is not always top but on the other hand I do have some very nice items from them which have held well.
The third find is from the winter collection and on sale now, I'm considering getting it. It's not spring/summer dress but maybe for the prize it's worth updating my fall/winter dress options...

I on the other hand LOVE the grandma’s couch patterns, but I think of them as romantic botanicals, or something like that!
The Gap has a ton of modest sleeved dresses in their new arrivals, but I was struck watching the videos how even the models didn’t appear to have waists in them, even with a waist tie. Fabrics seem flimsy and the dresses lack structure. I’m too old for that, frankly.

Sara - I don't mind them so much really, but there is a same-ness to the offerings that is annoying, especially for people who don't think that look is for them. There is some iteration of it out there somewhere that I could love for myself, for sure, but I'd have to comb through the many options and be picky about it.

All I did there was to put "floral dress" into the Nordy website search bar - have at it! So many options! It's a nice looking dress, actually.
