Norwegian Wedding - January

help! we are attending a wedding in January in Norway and I have no idea what to wear!
The invitation says 'suits'.
I am thinking of something very warm, but then assume that door will be warm so will need to find a balance.
Can anyone offer any advice?

Where in Norway (geographically) will the wedding take place?
Is this a courthouse wedding, or in a church? Will reception be in restaurant, or on country estate?

Norway isn't a monolith.

It's In Kvitfjell. The wedding is in the local church and the reception in a hotel. Looking at it geographically, it's truelly in the middle of nowhere - approx 3 hours north from Oslo airport.

Depending on weather, there's a non-zero chance you'll see some Hunter boots with nice dresses.

Back when I lived in suits, I had several sheath dresses with matching long jackets; that's what I would wear to a wedding like this. (It's not expected to buy something new and impractical.) Accessories can make it festive, if you like, but it's more important to be dressed respectfully (for the church and/or civil officials) and not to outshine the bride.

I would wear warm stockings and nice shoes, and a warm wrap in a flattering color, and have boots in the car.

Shoes, with boots on stand by, was kind of my thought.....however I didn't want to be the only one!
Looking at the weather there in January 2016, it ranged between -8 and -29!!

If you have a hat that's formal enough to wear with a suit, you might find that keeping your head warm makes it possible to survive stocking'd legs and nice shoes in very cold weather for a lot longer than you'd ever imagined possible.

This sounds incredibly romantic. I'm picturing Dr. Zhivago-like outfits with long, (faux) fur-lined elegant coats, and over-the-knee boots (again, fur-lined), topped with a fur hat. And arrival at the church in a sleigh, of course! Obviously, I'm out of control.

Xtabay - those are the scenes I had in my head, but when I started googling Norwegian weddings I found nothing!!

Bobbins, the netflix show won't be directly helpful for your purposes. But it will show some of what some non-urban locals would wear on an everyday basis around that time of year.

Doing an image search for norsk (Norwegian) bryllup (wedding) will lead you to a variety of sites, some of which will have pictures of guests in relevant attire. Many pictures show summer weddings, so adding "vinter" will narrow things further.

Most couples won't do all of these, but it describes a few things which could come up and might be new to you, depending on your own culture's and particular social group's wedding traditions.

Not a Norwegian but I do live in Norway. Norwegians may be the most casual dressers in day to day life but on special occasions they dress very formally. So expect lot of well dressed women and men in suits.
It will be very cold in January so people would wear boots and coats to venue and change into high heels were they hang the coat.
