Department store Nordstrom is working on a new pilot program to track shoppers' smartphones and tablets while they're in the store.
This will let Nordstrom see what sections of the store people visit and how long they stay. That's a dream come true for retailers.

Some people believe that someday stores could use that information to hit you with targeted ads or "exclusive" deals. And you thought it was creepy when online retailers did it!

Nordstrom is only testing this in a few stores right now, but if it works, you can rest assured other companies will jump on the bandwagon. You're not totally powerless, though; there are ways to stop it.

First, you have to know how Nordstrom is doing it.

Any smartphone or tablet with Wi-Fi turned on is constantly searching for a signal. When it finds a Wi-Fi hotspot, it will try to connect.
