Nordstrom Rack question

Pretty soon Union Square is going to become a bargain shopper's paradise: A Filene's Basement, Nordstrom Rack, and DSW all in one place! The Rack isn't open yet but I'm chomping at the bit.

I only question the availability of my size. Angie, I remember you saying that it was mostly a lost cause for a certain size range...0-2 or 0-4. I don't remember. I go back and forth between 2's and 4's. Am I likely to be disappointed? I will still check it out of course, but I just want to know what my expectations should be.

I was in there on Sun and with my daughter who is a 0 and she found a few cute things. In my expereince the sizing goes in waves. To me it is one of those places you just have to keep checking.

They have wonderful shoes though.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. The selection is diverse, and I agree about checking it frequently. I miss being able to go on a regular basis.
They often have bras at good prices, don't forget to check that section.

There is far less available in 0-2. It’s a fact. More in 4. There is a fair amount of XS and plenty of size S. But I’m not looking in the junior areas, Maya. I’m looking in the better-end, prêt a porter and designer collections. There is plenty of junior stuff in your size. You will not be dissappointed.

They also replenish stock every week so you’ve got to keep on going down and giving it a bash (stock is never more than a season old and often only 6 weeks old). Now that I am there more regularly with clients, I’ve scored a little better for my size. You’ve just got to persevere. If you love Nordies like I do, you will. It's also easy for me because it's very close to home :0)

Yeah, it's a bit of a pilgrimage for me, so I can't check in very frequently. I do not shop in the juniors department, actually (if you mean BP). I don't like how the clothes fit me anymore. Way too small and no room whatsoever in the bust. I had to size up to a large in a tunic once and it was STILL clingy.

I will definitely be going there for bras Marianne. I think my expectations were high now that I think about it. I don't even know if I can afford anything with the discount. I waas hoping to score some premium denim and other brands I might not ordinarily be able to afford, or maybe some Nordstrom brands like Semantiks. Hmm. Guess we'll find out. I'm not sure when it is scheduled to open.

Maya, just wanted to add my encouragement that it's best just to go there frequently if you are looking at something specific like bras. I've been there some weeks where there were only bras in my size in syles that I hated, and I've been there other times where an entire rack of Chantelle bras in various different styles were just unloaded, and I managed to find one that was perfect & duplicate it, too. I look forward to hearing about your experience once it opens!

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it-- our Nordstrom Rack opens in less than 2 week 2 blocks from my house! I plan to be there as the doors open!

Maya, it depends alot on location too. I bet in NYC, the size 0's and 2's will be picked over pretty quickly. Out in the 'burbs, it's not as bad (though I am sure they must shift most of their smaller sized inventory to cities).

That is definitely true Shana. I think maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up too high. It isn't really convenient for me to go there frequently. It's more like whenever I happen to be in the city, I will check it out. As it is the opening has been rescheduled for spring 2010 (was originally supposed to open fall 2009...ie NOW), so I won't even be able to report back any time soon.

Maya - I'm between a 4 and 6 and also S these days but have also found XS in my thinner years. I've found many great finds there. But it's really luck of the draw. Either you go there regularly to have a strong yield or just hit it at random (what I do) when you happen to be in the area and might find the find of a lifetime once every few visits.

If you are looking for premium denim expect to pay about 100.00 dollars versus 200.00 and up , so it does save a fair amount.
Also they have a really good run in the smaller sizes. Get on their call list and they will actually call BEFORE they get new shipments in:) and let you know "who and what" they are..so if you are looking for a particular brand, you will have a heads up and more likely to find your size!!

Ooh that is great advice Taylor. That would make my life a whole lot easier. Whenever I'm scouring the web for deals on premium denim, it always seems like sizes 23-25 linger the longest so it's surprising that they sell out so quickly in the store.

Sihaya, it sounds like your strategy is similar to what mine will be. I wonder if it's best to just go there without any plans or expectations and just let yourself be surprised by what you find.

Apparently there is a Rack in NJ but it's nearly as far from me as NYC and more of a hassle to get to. But I might check it out at some point while awaiting for the NYC one to open and at least see what it's like.

I have found some small sizes at the rack. They have a large juniors section. My experience with premium denim is that there are many more bootcuts than anything. I have never seen an ultra skinny pair which is what I am looking for although they have many small sizes.

Shoes. That's what I love about the Rack. Have found MeToos for as little as $25.
It's always a bit of a hunt at Rack but if you are in the mood and have time, can find good bargains and brands.
