Nordstrom Anniv Sale: what should I look at?

For Angie and anyone else who wants to chime in -

I'm going to try going to the Nordstrom anniversary sale, for the first time. My problem is, I don't really know what I want, and the experience sounds a bit overwhelming. I'm trying to look through the catalog to get ideas, but even that is overwhelming me. Would you be willing to give me some "assignments" of things to try on?

Here are my ideas so far:
- stirrup leggings
- knee high boots
- interesting blazers

Other ideas?

You’re really doing a great job of pushing your envelope on your own, Medusa. Do you have a list of items that you’d like to get this season? Wardrobe gaps? Like coat, jeans, jacket, boots etc?

Off the top of my head, NAS has a STELLAR assortment of leather jackets (and coats), pencil skirts, dresses, handbags and cascading cardigans this year. I think that the “Point of View” area might intrigue you. It’s quite casual and the prices are good. That’s where I’d start! Hope that helps.

Angie - I'm having a mini-crisis about the sale. There are so many beautiful items, but I don't know that there's anything I desperately NEED. I'm trying to figure out how to narrow down what is worth indulging in. Sigh.

Don't panic! Let's break it down:

Jeans? Jackets? Frocks? Bags? We'll have you sorted.

OK, pause on the panic.

Jeans - I definitely want some skinny jeans that fit well (higher rise, right length). I'm going to try the Cookie Johnson styles if they have them.

Jackets - I really love the biker jacket look that so many on the forum wear so well, but I prefer not to buy leather. It seems like there are a lot of biker jackets in the sale catalog but that all are leather; please correct me if I'm wrong. I would also love some funky, interesting blazers to wear with jeans - the LAMB one that Angie modeled seemed pretty great.

Frocks - I don't know. I don't wear them often, and I just bought two in the last couple months. Part of me thinks it's fun and I should go with it and get more, part of me thinks I should wait.

Bags - So...I have a deep and abiding hatred of handbags, unfortunately, because they can be such a great accessory. I pretty much won't carry a bag unless it's a backpack (more comfortable). One thing I want to research at some point is interesting, stylish backpacks (if such a thing exists). But this doesn't seem like a real NAS item.

OK, I just called my local Nordstrom and asked if I could make an appointment with a personal shopper to try on all the stuff on my list. It looks like they already sold out of the CE sheath dress in my size, but she's going to pull the other items for me to try on tomorrow.

I'm excited!

I'm happy that you got an appt with a personal shopper. I'm sure they will show you lot's of things. Remember what Angie says, "Be selective".
One thing I noticed about your items of choice is that the stirrup tights are not leggings and they look kind of shear. I don't know if that's what you want or if you are looking for leggings like Angie and Maya have.

I think you have a great shopping list there. I was also going to echo San about the stirrups. Are you looking for leggings or tights? The ones I and Angie (and Tam) have are leggings and personally I prefer those for their coverage and comfort.

I purchased the cordoroy jacket in the yellow and LOVE it. It's a very flattering fit and I think it will be wearable with quite a bit both in the fall & spring.

Maya and San - good comment on the stirrup tights! I hadn't noticed that. I definitely want thick, opaque leggings. Maybe I should look for those somewhere else.

Angie - you are probably super busy with your clients, but if you have any comments on the list or suggestions for other things I might try, I'd love to hear from you. I'll check here again in the morning before I head off to my appointment.

My LAMB jacket arrived today and is going back on Monday. I needed a smaller size and like a coconut the sleeves are too short. (I have gorilla arms). I hope yours works!

Here is my 2 cents:

o The corduroy jacket is fabulous. Julie’s looks KILLER. You won’t be disappointed.

o Pass on the tie-front jacket – your shoulder line is too strong for that style.

o Pass on the high- neck papelli dress. You’ll look much better in a lower neckline.

o The rest looks fab!

So my Nordstrom shopping trip didn't lead to much immediate gratification, because most of what I wanted had to be ordered from other stores.

The only things I brought home were some long pearls and the Halogen blazer in two colors, purple and brown. I really liked this blazer - it's very soft, fine wale corduroy, almost between corduroy and velvet. I *think* the fit is good but would love feedback.

The Caslon cardigan was too scratchy for me, so I passed on that. Angie was of course right about the tie-front jacket, which I tried on because the personal shopper had already pulled it - it was not flattering on me.

The Classiques Entier sheath dress was sold out except for a size 10, which was too big for me. I ordered a size 8, which I really hope fits; I'm slightly worried I might need a 6 and by then it will be gone from this earth. It's a beautiful dress, which most of you probably know after seeing it on Kristen and Angie.

I tried on the Cookie Johnson "Faith" jeans, which have a reasonably high rise and are pretty skinny on me - they only had black in my size, though, so I had to order the regular denim wash.

The denim boyfriend blazer is cute, but they were out in my size. Ordered it.

Stores in Colorado didn't even get the Vince convertible collar cardigan or the LAMB blazer, so I had to order those. I ordered the blazer in both a 6 and an 8 because I'm worried about the sizing - Angie, what was your experience with how it's sized?

Anyway, I'm slightly bummed that I don't have all kinds of stuff now to photograph and show you. The orders might not even get here before I leave on vacation in a week, so I am looking at serious delayed gratification.

I think the purple cordoroy blazer looks great on you! I actually prefer it to the brown. I really like the dark wash of the Cookie Johnson jeans - I'll bet those will be super comfortable too.

I can't wait to see the Lamb blazer on you - it looked very cute in the store. Great purchases!

The purple jacket looks wonderful! It’s beautiful quality and the price is dead right. This jacket would look good on Maya too.

I *think* you wanted to try Kristen’s style. It’s beautiful and a real retro classic.

In my experience, the LAMB blazer ran pretty true to size. I wear a size 0 and this is what worked in the bodice with a cami and polo neck worn underneath. It was not too snug at all. Nice fit. But the sleeves ran short on the smaller size, (I have long arms), so I had to return the jacket. Hope it works for you.

Angie - thanks for the comments. Sorry about my sheath confusion, I did have them confused.

I have short arms, so hopefully the LAMB blazer will work (fingers crossed).

I think I'm going to stick with medusa as my name for now. Being more anonymous is comforting to me at the moment...I'm still trying to be comfortable posting photos of myself. I tend to be a private person and it feels pretty public. Maybe later I'll lose all my inhibitions and go public? I hope that's ok.
