Noise cancelling headphones?

I believe there was a discussion about noise cancelling headphones for travel several years ago in ‘off topic’, but lazy me - I couldn’t locate it just scrolling down a few pages. Before Covid, when travelling was more a ‘thing’?

Well, I’m considering picking up a pair? Set? For an upcoming trip that starts with a red eye flight across the pond!

For reference - I’ve never been much of a headset wearer (except phone at work in later years) and never wore (and still don’t) wear earphones when walking/running/or working out. I have become a recent convert to audiobooks in the last year, but just set up Libby on my iPad and listen whilst doing chores. Earphones might be a better idea and allow me to listen to books whilst moving about, including weeding in the garden, etc. However, this is primarily for the trip…

What’s been your experience with noise cancelling headphones? And travelling? Any recommendations?

Noise cancelling head phones are indispensable for travel in my experience. Bose make the best.

I like air pods for everything else!

My husband has the Bose over the ear version. But those didn't fit my head right (they kept sliding no matter how I tried to adjust them). So I use my Airpods Pro and actually, they are surprisingly good. I wear them on a trip and also I go for walks and talk on the phone using them, or listen to music, or listen to an audiobook.

I bought a pair of Bose headphones based on Angie’s recommendation for my travel to Switzerland/Iceland/Scotland this past August and September. I love them! They work beautifully! Mine are Bose QuietComfort wireless.

It's a long flight from Australia to almost anywhere, and noise cancelling headphones are now an essential to me!
I found if I wanted to wear a mask on the plane (which I generally do, at least on the way over), then the airbud ones were better than the over- the-ear ones (too much going on, something was uncomfortable).
My airpods worked pretty well last trip, but even better were Loops. Loops don't last long enough for the really long haul, so I used both on each leg, and it really does cut down on stress/ allows you to rest more. I often play music or a podcast as well as just the noise cancelling.

My husband wore AirPods for our recent trip and was counting the number of crying babies on our flight over (5, apparently). Meanwhile I used the airplane provided movie headphones and was not as bothered? At home I do love my Soundcore over ear noise cancelling headphones (mentioned in a previous thread) for chores and gardening but it never occurs to me to travel with them due to size. Probably worth it for the noise-sensitive though.

This is a dumb question, but do the Bose noise cancelling headphones cancel noise without having music playing? I’m asking because I’ve been using good earplugs at sporting events for a few years, which helps a little, but the noise levels are getting even louder now. Tonight’s basketball game music was running into the 90-95 decibel level and sometimes higher. I’d like to cancel the noise but I don’t want to listen to other music or audiobooks during sports events. I use AirPods at home for listening to books, but everything is quiet there, no background noise. Thank you for any advice!

They do cancel noise without music. I put mine on as soon as I get on a plane, and turn them on. Then I might turn on music. But just the muffling of the noise is calming.

ETA: My handbell choir has been playing twelve bells, with six people, each playing two. We stand close together in a semi circle and I’ve thought about my hearing. When we’re standing in a line it doesn’t seem bad, but too loud in the smaller group. It’s something I’ll be thinking about.

I use Bose noise canceling headphones on all flights, both domestic and international. They are pricey but I won't travel without them. They are a lifesaver with crying babies, loud talkers, and anything else disruptive on a plane.
