Night out outfit inspirations: I guess I STILL have to figure that out

I thought I was in a happy place with my couple new little numbers (an inexpensive cobalt blue lace dress by H&M and a white tee with a lacey neckline). I guess I'm really not.

I rarely go out clubbing because that's just not me and I don't enjoy it that much. I have dressy dresses for expensive restaurants I never get to go to, and even if I don't have them right now, I think I could sort out pretty easily a job interview outfit or a wedding outfit. But, girls, I'm clueless when it comes to party outfits.

I always feel wrong in what I wear. Somehow all of my friends seem to know how to make it work -yet I don't. Yesterday I ended up in that cobalt blue lace dress wich suddenly was too long to look nightish (and I was wearing thick tights and booties because of the cold, which didn't help) and then it look weird accross the bust and terrible across my stomach. The other options looked even worse to me. Friends said I looked good but I didn't feel right, which is what I think really matters.

I need some non-fancy ideas for going out. They should be on the casual and younger side, and maybe a bit rough/tough and sexy. I'm tired of ladylike. Any ideas?

How about wearing a buttoned waistcoat as a top (with tank underneath) and some well worn in jeans and booties or oxfords? I see that often and I think it works well, if you get the pieces right. And it doesn't have to look boring. You could chose a different kind of jeans or colored ones, a patterned or textured waistcoat with some great detail and so on.

I don't often go clubbing either, we prefer some live music and with those events people don't really dress up. I mostly wear my black flared skirt to those, with a tank or tee and boots or cons. Sometimes with a denim jacket thrown over it.

Astrid, thanks for the sugestion. I'm not really a fan of waistcoats though And I do want something a bit fancier that doesn't involve jeans -of any kind. I do that all the time: jeans + cuter top. It is comfortable and looks good but the places people take me to somehow sport women dressed in dressier outfits. I would totally do the jeans + cute top for a live music event or a pub (which is what I usually do as well).

I think I'll try go on the sales and see if I can find something. I really do not want to spend a lot on stuff that usually goes out of fashion/becomes boring in a short period of time and that I won't wear that much anyways.

I also want to look for a dressier pair of shoes for this sort of things, weddings, fancier occasions, and I am willing to pay the extra money here, but somehow I never find something that pleases my eye and my feet at the same time and on the same level!

How about a skirt then instead of jeans? That would definitely be dressier but I think it's easier to dress up or down as a dress and you can easily change the vibe with different tops. If you find something georgeous but a bit more classic you could go more trendy with tops. I can relate to your shoe problems, I'm having them too!

I'd suggest creating a Pinterest board or some other inspiration file of looks that appeal to you ---- These can help you create a couple formulas in your mind to try. I find that using inspiration folders helps me "see" my clothing items differently, making new combos of color, silhouette, etc.

Echoing Astrid, would you feel more comfy in separates for evening? Are you sure you want a dress? Leather pants, satin skinnies, with a going-out-worthy top? I ask because I know I feel like me in separates.

I wear the same silhouettes, just different fabrications.

Example: Skinny Jeans, sequin top, blazer, cute boots or pumps, and a clutch.
I would do the same thing without the sequin top and more daytime shoes, for everyday.

Example: Body con dress, booties, tights, clutch and blazer. I would wear a dress with a blazer any day of the week.

You can also "nightime" your look with stronger makeup and hair.

Zapotee, those are my usual pairings. Maybe it's the fit I'm not getting right, or maybe my tops/dresses are not dressy/pretty enough for me. I guess I have to do a bit more of research and hunting.

I have to find a new series of jeans that fit me now that my four old pairs by MNG in an abnormal size (in-between 37) are getting worn out and MANGO has decided to discontinue my weird size. Now, imagine doing that with dressy pants as well? No way! Skirts are not comfortable for me either since they move upwards and don't stay put.

I'm so much better off with dresses... and I will defo try the Pinterest board!

I would say leather skinnies, or coated skinnies and a sequin top, or big silk blouse.

OK, I do go a little sexy sometimes, maybe that's a route you can take too! Let me see if I can dig out some pics.
