New trousers - K/R?

I am sorry I have been MIA for the last month. My craziness at work continues and if anything it only intensified. I also going on a business trip next week and have to prepare for it on all levels...you guessed it, including packing!
I got a pair of straight leg trousers today and need your advice on them. I am between sizes and went one size up because I don't like my trousers to be tight anywhere. They are made of a nice and soft taupe micro check fabric and I think they drape pretty well.
They are also too long so I need to hem them if I keep them. I also think that maybe they should be tapered a bit more from the knee down but I am not sure if this can be done.
What I am not sure about is the waistband. It is made of a contrasting black fabric. It will not be a problem with black or dark tops but is ti too much with the lighter tops? I have tried it with a belt in #3 - what do you think?
I appreciate your help on this very much. If they get YLF approval maybe my mom can hem them this week and I can take them for my trip?

I really like these trousers. The fit of them in back is great! I agree maybe they could be tapered a bit but it may not be necessary at all when you get them to the right length. There is a sort of 40s elegance to the drape. I do not mind the black wasitband; it seems to function as a belt. It looks okay with a light top (if you style it, I mean) but I am not wild about it with the belt on top; perhaps that is a function of the belt itself.

Are these to replace your other grey wide legs? Or a different purpose. I really like the fabric.

I like them, and I find the waistband is actually quite trendy because it's colour blocking. I like how you have styled it in 1 and 2. I don't like the belt with it.

Suz, they are not wide legs but straight leg. I don't have any trousers in this shape yet. I have black skinnies but they fit very different from those. I have attached the pictures of my wide leg and skinny trousers for comparison - they are quite different.

Thanks Krish, looking at the pictures I don't like the belt either. They come with a skinny black belt so that may work... Nice point about color blocking - I did not think about them this way...

The fabric and drape are great. I agree with the others about the belt, and I'm not a big fan of the color blocking so I would wear it with darker tops myself.

Yes. I see that. I am not sure they are as narrow as Angie's but once they are the right length it will be easier to see. And you can also see about making them straighter if necessary. I really like them on you a lot.

I like everything about them. While it's easy enough to narrow the bottom portions of the legs, I can't see it needs it. Take some pins and pin up the hem and then look how the
better length makes them hang better in your eyes. They will behave differently. I'm short and always see my pants this way at first but don't make a decision on them until I have turned up the hems experimentally. That's usually all it needs.

Sveta I think these look great and I see no problem with the fit. The wide belt doesn't work to my eye but what about a contrasting skinny belt?

Whoa! I'm loving the soft neutrals of the whole outfit and think the trousers are great. I also like them best without the belt.

Vildy, you may be right. I will hem them first and then decide on tapering the leg more.\
Deborah, I don't have a skinny belt long enough to work with them except the black one. I will definitely keep this idea in mind!

I was thinking about you this morning as I left for work and hoping you were getting some relief from the work stress.

I think the pants fit you very well and look really good on you but you do have a grey pair already don't you? Are these one different enough to add a new element to your wardrobe or would they just substitute for the other pair?

These pants are different in shape than my Express trousers and I think this difference will give me enough variety in the outfits even if colors are in the same range.

I quite liked them, until I saw you in the other two pictures you posted. Your legs look 2 miles long in the other two pictures, and now the new trousers seem to make your legs look short to my eye. Maybe it's just the hem thats messing it up for me??? Possibly try them with a darker top just for comparison. They certainly don't look bad, but I think you look fantastic in the other two pairs.

They have potential, Sveta :). Gorgeous puppy-tooth fabric!

They need to be shortened and tapered at the bottom - that's how you will achieve that modern slouchy fit. Off to Mama-extraordinaire they go!

it's hard for me to tell the fit with them so long....i do like thecolor blocking at the top but i think the belt takes away from it, unless the belt completely covers the color blocked part.

How much they need to be narrowed on the bottom - to the same width my Marten skinny pants have or mid way there? They are about 2 - 2.5" wider on the bottom than Martins lying flat...
Also - should they be tapered from the knee down or from the hip or just at the hem? I was thinkig from the knee...

From the knee for sure. Not sure about the hem width. My Theory trousers are 13 inches. Yours will need to be wider I think.

Nice trousers, I like the band without the belt since it looks like a belt on it's own. I also go up one size in trousers, I don't care for a tight fit in professional settings.

Sorry your work schedule continues to devour your time and energy :)! I hope it's going to get better soon.

I like these pants! I can see them tapered at the bottom--that would look cute, I think. They don't seem very "slouchy" to me, just because the fit through the hips is pretty snug, but I still think you can get a cute silhouette by having them tapered beginning at the knee.

Here are two pairs of mine, to give you an idea (since we are the same height, about). First pair, Theory trousers (pic from last winter, so sorry about the poor lighting). They taper to 15.5 inches (just under 8" laying flat). The blue Express pair were bootcuts when I bought them. I had them tapered, beginning at the knee, to 14" (7" laying flat). Interestingly, the Theory trousers look just as tapered, but they are wider. I think it's because they are longer. So, bottom line, definitely play around with the length and the tapering at the same time, so you get the look you are after.

Yeah, I would say they are tailored but loose-fitting, or something like that (they are loose through the hips and thighs, mainly, but not baggy enough to be "slouchy").

I need to write a post about this. Slouchy means that the crotch point has dropped. Your crotch point in these trousers is in the correct tailored place, and so is Jonesys'.

Baggy means loose fitting. Roomy.

Angie, I would never get this difference on my own. I guess I prefer baggy fit to slouchy then but "slouchy" sounds more sophisticated than "baggy"...:-)
